Hi! I need some help in getting my task manager to open up. Nothing I do allows the task manager to open up. I've tried ctrl+alt+delete, and that doesn't work. I've tried right-clicking on the task bar and going to task manager and that doesn't work. I've even tried clicking on start, then run, then typing taskmgr and a message pops up saying that "another program is currently using the file". I've already scanned my system for possible spyware/malware and I've fixed a couple of threats however, the taskmanager is still not working. I've posted my HJT log and I hope that someone can help me! thanks so much!

Hi sylvesterstein,

Please download Killbox here: and save it to your desktop. We’ll use it later.

You might like to print this instructions or save it to your desktop so you’ll have access to it while in Safe Mode.

Run HijackThis and put a check next to these entries:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Parallel Tasking] C:\Program Files\Parallel Tasking\ptask.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [navapp] C:\Program Files\NavExcel\NavHelper\v2.0.4d\navapp.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winupdate] C:\Program Files\winupdate\winupdate.exe /auto
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [p2pnetworking] p2pnetworking.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winupdates] C:\Program Files\winupdates\winupdates.exe /auto
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [p2pnetworking] p2pnetworking.exe

Close all browsers and windows except Hijackthis and click “Fix checked” button to have HijackThis remove the entries you checked.

Please Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs, and uninstall this:
NavHelper

You need to reconfigure Windows to show hidden files:
Doubleclick My Computer | Tools | Folder Options | View tab
Select “Show Hidden Files and Folders”
Uncheck “Hide extensions for known file types”
Uncheck “Hide protected operating system files” (Recommended)
Select Apply to All Folders | Yes | Apply | OK (reverse the process to hide them back when you're done deleting)

You need to Reboot your system to 'Safe Mode'.
Restart your computer, and when a black screen appears, begin tapping [F8]. The Windows

Advanced Options menu will appear, select Safe mode, and then press Enter.

Delete these folders using windows explorer(if present)
C:\Program Files\NavExcel
C:\Program Files\winupdates
C:\Program Files\winupdate

Then Double-click on the killbox.exe program. Select the option labeled "Delete on Reboot."
Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C: (or by highlighting them, then rightclick and click "copy").

C:\WINDOWS\system32\p2pnetworking.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.com
C:\WINDOWS\system32\netstat.com
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ping.com
C:\WINDOWS\system32\regedit.com
C:\WINDOWS\system32\taskkill.com
C:\WINDOWS\system32\tasklist.com
C:\WINDOWS\system32\tracert.com
C:\WINDOWS\system32\taskmgr.com
c:\z.tmp

Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the "Delete on Reboot" prompt.
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

Please have at least one of these free online scans:
http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
Scan and disinfect your computer for viruses/Trojans, take note of what they find but can’t clean.

And post a new Hijackthis log please.

Hi Emilita! Thank you sooo much for helping me get my taskmgr back up and running again! I've followed ur instructions and have had only 1 difficulty so far. I couldnt find this folder:

C:\Program Files\NavExcel

and NavExcel was not in Add/Remove programs either.

Anyways, I've scanned my computer with http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ online scanner. Here are the spyware/adware threats found on my computer that could not be deleted:
Spyware Name Spyware Type
COOKIE_130 Cookie
COOKIE_1314 Cookie
COOKIE_3182 Cookie

It also found a worm that could not be deleted:

Worm_Mugly.l

Also, here's my updated HJT log:

Hi, sylvesterstein,
Your HijackThis log looks clean!

It also found a worm that could not be deleted:

Worm_Mugly.l

TrendMicro didn't say which path the worm is located?

I couldnt find this folder:

C:\Program Files\NavExcel

If NavHelper wasn't in Add/Remove Programs list don't worry about it, that just mean it didn't come with uninstall. But the NavExcel folder should be there In the C:\Program Files folder
Try deleting it from the command prompt.
Start > Run > type in cmd press Enter
at the DOS window that opens type in:
cd C:\Program Files
press Enter
then type in: del NavExcel
press Enter

Try downloading this free trial Ewido Suite, it may delete the worm that TrendMicro couldn't.
Please download ewido security suite it is a free version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful")
  • Exit ewido. DO NOT scan yet.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates

Also Download CleanUp
Install the program, dont run it yet.

To reboot into SafeMode:
Restart your computer, and when a black screen appears, begin tapping F8. The Windows Advanced Options menu will appear, select Safe mode, and then press Enter.

Now open Ewido and do a scan of your system.
[*]Click on scanner
[*]Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
[*]You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
[*]Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
[*]Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
[*]Click Save report.
[*]Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.

Now run the CleanUp program:
*IMPORTANT NOTE*
CleanUp deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups.
If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp

Running CleanUp
  • Start CleanUp by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
  • When CleanUp starts go to the Options button (right side of CleanUp screen)
  • Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
  • Now place a checkmark next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
    [list]
  • Delete Cookies
This is optional, if you leave the box checked it will remove all of your cookies, at this point removing cookies is a good idea
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
[*]Click OK
[*]Then click on the CleanUp button. This will take a short while, let it do its thing.
[*]Close CleanUp

Please post the Ewido log here, and let me know how things are.

Hi sylvesterstein,
Well, your last Hijackthis log is clean!
And I'm glad that your pc is working fine now.

The trojan.binny that Ewido finds but has error cleaning is located in your SunJava cache, I don't have SunJava but I guess you can go to control Panel > Java Plugin > you can then find an option there to empty/clear the cache.
NavExcel might have been already deleted when you ran those online scans.

To help protect your computer in the future I recommend the following free programs:
SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.

It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft.
To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.

Regularly running your AdAware and Spybot and make sure you check for updates and download updates before scanning.
AdAware
Spybot Search & Destroy

And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?
and Spyware Aid's spyware article:
Spyware, Adware, Malware:
What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.

Happy computing! :tazz:
