this is my first post so please be patient. I ran AVG for the first time last night. It told me I had several viruses and trojans. 5 java/byteverify and 3 trojans-dropper.small.15.ah There has been funny things going on with my puter like, system time changing 5 to 10 times a day. As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have a little malware and a Trojan that needs to be eradicated. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

Before doing that, I notice that you are running two antivirus programmes in real-time; McAfee and AVG. This is bad practice as they will interfere with each other and slow down your PC. Please uninstall one of them.

Could you please disable SpySweeper from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything.

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

CCleaner
Ewido Security Suite

Install Ewido Security Suite.

• Install Ewido security suite
• When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
  • Install background guard
  • Install scan via context menu
  • You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
  • Then click on Start Update.
• The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates
Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:

Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.

• The programme will now open to the main screen.
• When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.

Now that the updates have been installed do the following:

• Click on scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• NOTE: During some scans with Ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
• Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
• Click Save report.
• Save the report .txt file to your desktop and include it in your reply.

Now close Ewido security suite.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please delete this file (if present) using Windows Explorer:

C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\update.exe

Close Windows Explorer

Now we must hide the files we revealed earlier by reversing the process, this is an important safeguard to stop important system files being deleted by accident.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Go to START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL>JAVA PLUG-IN double-click to open it. Choose CACHE>CLEAR>YES then close the programme.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

Now we must hide the files we revealed earlier by reversing the process, this is an important safeguard to stop important system files being deleted by accident.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Go to START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL>JAVA PLUG-IN double-click to open it. Choose CACHE>CLEAR>YES then close the programme.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

Congratulations! your new log is clean. Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

Thanks Crusty. I have a couple of questions that I hope what we just did might have fixed.

1st I have been having a problem using IE, most of the time it tells me that IE is not responding and to close it other times it just wont load all the way.

2nd I already have spybot on my puter. Lately on the left collum where the picture for the recovery, search and such are I can see the icon but not what its for. Is this because of the malware/virus I had on here or should I start a new thread to figure this one out.

3rd should I leave cccleaner on, I have McAfee, spybot and Adaware.

Last but not least thank you very much for helping, at times I think a sledge hammer would work better ...lol.

Sounds like the programme is corrupted. Personally I wouldn't use it, Firefox is much better and a lot safer too. If you want to continue using it, you could go ADD/REMOVE in the control panel, highlight the programme and then click remove. A new window will open and give the option of uninstalling or repairing; try the repair first if still no good, download Firefox, install it, then uninstall IE>reboot>download a fresh copy and install again.

Simple answer is I don't know. Get rid of it and download a fresh copy.

CCleaner is an excellent tidy-up programme. Use it frequently but never with any other windows open. I personally don't mike McAfee. AVG scans your PC daily, it updates daily, it is FREE to home users and it is one of the very best.

You have Ewido which is a 14-day trial. It will run in real time if you click GUARD. It will update daily and protect you well. After 14 days it will no longer update automatically. You can then either buy it and continue or remove GUARD and update it manually for use as an on-demand scanner.

Again, personally I use Microsoft AntiSpyware in real time, and then for on-demand scanning: Ewido, Ad-Aware and Spybot.

You might want to do a system file check since you are having some problems. The scan will automatically replace any corrupt files that it finds.

Click Start
Select Run
At the prompt type sfc /scannow Please note that there is a single space between sfc and /scannow.

Typing this will start the programme, and a box should appear telling you how much longer the process should take.

Sometimes the scan will prompt you for your Windows XP disc upon starting the scan. if this happens please make sure that you can view protected files:My Computer
Tools
Folder Options
View
"Uncheck" Hide protected operating system files.
Then rerun the scan.

Once the scan is complete:

Check your Windows Updates! After using the File Protection Service, you might need to reapply some updates.

Reboot.

Folder Options

"Check" Hide protected operating system files.
