Similar to some other threads I've seen in this forum, I'm often getting warnings from NAV on the hclean32.exe Trojan. In addition, I'm getting the pop-up balloons stating "your computer might be at risk" quite frequently. I've been through all of the steps for getting started (CleanUp, Ad-Aware, Ewide, Spybot, etc.) more than once and have tried pasting the path (C:\WINDOWS\system32.exe) into the Killbox program (in safe mode). Yet the pop-ups continue. This is very annoying - any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm running Windows XP Pro SP2. My Ewido and HiJack This logs follow:

Hi slade_32 and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Excal and I will be helping you.

Silent Runners:
  • Please click this link to download Silent Runners.
  • Save it to the desktop.
  • Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
  • You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done yet, just let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once you receive the prompt "All Done!", double-click on the new text file on the desktop and copy that entire log and paste it here.

  • NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.
For some time it will look like nothing is happening. Just keep waiting.
  • Once it's done it will create a log. A window will come up telling you when it's saved. Please post that log here

Download WinPFind and extract it to your C:\ folder. This will create a folder called WinPFind in the C:\ folder.
don't do anything with it yet.

boot into safe mode

Inside c:\WinPFind is a file called WinPFind.exe. Double-click on this file to launch the program. Once it is launched, click on the Start Scan button and wait for it to finish. This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works as it can take a while, upwards to 30 minutes or more.

reboot

Please post the winpfind log

Man you are fast! Sorry for the delay - had to work today. Here is the WinPFind log:

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as fixme.reg (make sure that Save as Type is set at "All Files") on your Desktop. Ensure there is no space at or above REGEDIT 4.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"System"=-
"System"=""

Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?". Answer "Yes" and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully".

If you use Windows XP, Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing/visible also.
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the configure button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Click on "Delete File on Reboot"
  • Navigate to this file - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\certcclie.exe
  • Double click on that file.
  • HJT asks you if you want to reboot, now. Click "Yes".
after reboot

open Hijackthis and do a scan. Please check off the following items:

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{EA90EB5F-3B29-43BC-8AB3-6F7B1A9D9920}: NameServer = 195.95.218.1,85.255.112.7

click FIX CHECKED then close Hijackthis

reboot

Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Please save and post the results from the scan!

then post a fresh HiJackthis log and a fresh Silent runners log please :tazz:

Excal, does the Killbox step need to be done in safe mode or does it not matter?

Excal, I've deleted the files using Killbox (in normal mode). I figured that if I was in safe mode, I would not be able to access this site and copy the file paths.

On a side note, before I removed the files (with Killbox), I searched through Windows Explorer and found all of the files except for the 'csvph.exe' file. In fact, if I got anywhere near the 'hclean32.exe' file, my NAV popped up with the warning. Before getting any assistance from you, I would perform a similar search and could never find the files. So I think we're on the right track. I will keep you posted as to the status of any pop-ups (I'm crossing my fingers and thinking this may have done it!)

Thanks so much for your help.

Sorry about the late reply :tazz:

It could have been done in normal mode :0

Everyhing is looking great, I really think we go it.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if the main link does not work) and install it. Please Do not run yet.

Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes.

Open up and run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan when it ask if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK
  • When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Reboot into normal mode and please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

Please post the Active scan log, Ewido Log and a fresh HiJackThis log. Let me know how your computer is running.

Excal, from the looks of your instructions, after running the CleanUP program in safe mode, should the Ewido scan also be run in safe mode?

Well I ran the CleanUp program in safe mode and I ran an Ewido scan in both safe mode and again in normal mode. Neither time did it pick up anything. It looks like the ActiveScan found one item. Here are the ActiveScan, Ewido and HiJack This logs:

Great job, it appears your computer is clean :tazz:

Ensure you rehide your “hidden files and folders” back to the way they were.

Now that your system is Malware Free, it is important to reset your system Restore. Click Here to learn how to.

I recommend that you Defrag your computer before setting your Restore points:

Go to start>all programs>accessories>system tools>Disk Defragmentor Make sure it set to the proper drive (default should be your main driver) and click on defragment

Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs, if you don't already have them, for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE
Spybot S&D
Microsoft Anti-Spyware

If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest one of these free programs:
*Note - do not use more than one anti-virus program as it will more than likely cause conflict.

AVG
Avast
AntiVir

The following free programs are great for prevention:

SpywareBlaster 3.4
Spywareguard
IE/Spyad

A Firewall is a must! Here are 3 good free versions:
(do not have more than one firewall running on your system)

Sygate
Kerio
ZoneLabs

There are other options other than Internet Explorer for a browser, which some say have better security. Two of them are:

Firefox
Opera

If you decide to keep Internet Explorer, This site is a great source for tightening up security on It's settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided. Also read How I got Infected

Excal, one quick question. As far as "resetting your system Restore," I'm not really sure what to do. I clicked on the link you provided, however, I'm not sure I'f I'm supposed to check the box in System Properties that reads "Turn off System Restore on all drives" (it is currently un-checked on my sytem). I did do the defrag as you suggested.

On a side note, I have been pop-up free for 3 days now, so your help is hugely appreciated. However, I have noticed that I've had more difficulty getting on-line these last few days. I'm on a cable modem and typically have had no such problems.

Thanks again for all of your help. This forum is amazing.
