I haven't noticed any symptoms, except being redudantly prompted by virus protection that i have these files. They are in my quarantine folder in my C: drive.

I have tried spybot search and destroy, cleanup, cwshredder, ewido, trend housecall, trojan hunter, and a manual removal guide which suggested removing registry files. (none were removed, as none listed on the website were found).

When i try to delete the files from the quarantine folder, I'm prompted again by virus protection. Eventually it says i can't delete it because it may be in use (as i feared). It will, however, allow me to delete the quarantine folder. I'm assuming this would not help. am I right?

I'd really appreciate any help you could offer.

Hi and welcome to Geeks To Go!

HijackThis logs are the weapon we use to dectect malware around here, so post a log please (instructions are at bottom) in the following forum!
before we can help you, please attempt the following, these will help us eliminate the easy spyware problems first, making
the serious fix, as short as possible...

1: Please download Ad-aware and install it if you don't have it already. Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it. Also go Here to download the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. To run this tool, go into Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection. Also make sure to customize the settings in Ad-aware at for better scan results. Run the scan and fix everything that it finds.

Download and install Spybot S&D. Run Spybot and click on the 'Search for Updates' button.Install any updates that are available.

Now click Mode menu and choose 'Advanced Mode'. Next click on Immunize to your left. Click the Immunize button (green cross) on top to Immunize your computer - you should do this each time there is an update. Now go to Tools->Resident and make sure that TeaTimer is checked. What this will do is monitor any system/registry changes and will ask you for permission to change any of these settings.

Now click on the 'Spybot-S&D' option on the top left to go back to the main screen. Next click on the 'Check for Problems' button. Let it run the scan. If it finds something, check all those in RED and hit the 'Fix Selected Problems' button. Exit Spybot. If you keep getting the DSO Exploit entries, even after you updated Windows and fixed them, then download the Spybot DSO Exploit Fix and install it over the current Spybot installation.

Now the good stuff...
Please download HijackThis - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware

on your computer. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Double click on the program to run it.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Post that log here!

That Log is Clean. Lets try this...
bUpdate your Ewido Security Suite.

Boot Into Safe Mode
Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.

Run Ewido Security Suite
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
  • Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.
Close ewido security suite.

Reboot your system in Normal Mode.

Further Scanning
Please run a Scan at the Following site
Panda ActiveScan

Make sure that you choose the "fix" or "clean" option when available
at the end of this scan you will be given then option to save a log from the scan -SAVE THAT LOG- and post it here

Please post a fresh HijackThis log, the Ewido Log & the Log from Panda so that we can check if your system is clean.

When i run Panda Active Scan, it says there are errors on the page, and it won't run the scan. Here are my other 2 logs, though.

Download MWaveScan
  • Double-click mwav.exe and unzip it to its default Directory @ C:\Kaspersky
  • Locate "kavupd.exe" in the New Folder and Double Click to Update.
  • If it says the signatures are more than 30 days old, keep trying!
  • Keep trying until you get the actual signatures! (it will say "downloading yadda yadda yadda")
  • When you see "Updates downloaded Successfully, please press any key to continue" go ahead, but do not run anything else in this folder...

Boot Into Safe Mode
Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.

Now go to the Kaspersky folder-> Locate and Double Click "mwavscan.com" to launch the MWAV Scanner!

Once opened-> Leave the Default Settings "ticked" and add a "tick" to"Drives"-> this will light up "All Drives"-> Add a "tick" to "Scan all Files"-> Click "Scan Clean" to begin!
This Scan may take Several Hours or more to Complete,Depending on the Hard Drive Size!

Please be sure it is Completed before proceeding!

1. Once the Scan has finished, All entries Identified as Infected will displayed in the lower pane! - Highlight everything that is inside the lower pane and press Ctrl+C at the same time to Copy!
2. Open a Blank Notepad Page and Paste the results (Ctrl+V) to it and Save it to your Desktop!

the files in question are the title of the post. these files were detected by mccaffee, could not be cleaned, and were moved to a quarantine folder. i tried all of the methods on this site, and while waiting for my initial reply, i decided to delete the quarantine folder. since that time, i have not been able to locate the files, nor have i had any trouble, but i thought perhaps you would be able to find whether they still existed on my system or not. i'm guessing perhaps they don't. in either case, i thank you very much for your help. :tazz:

nope! Methinks they are gone! :tazz:

Congratulations Your Log is Clean!!

If you are still having trouble, please dont continue with these instructions just yet. LET ME KNOW!

Otherwise, we have a few clean up items to deal with.

1. System Restore
Now that we know your system is clean, we want to purge any potentially infected restore points. To do that, complete the following:

Turn off System Restore by Clicking Start > right-click My Computer and then click Properties. Click the System Restore tab > Check "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives". Click Apply. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this. Click OK.

To re-enable this function - simply uncheck this same box, and click "apply" and "ok"

2. Reset Hidden Files & Folders
Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is UNchecked. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are invisible. CHECK the Hide protected operating system files option.

Also Consider...
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:
How is she running now? Any further problems? If not, Good work, and Happy Computing!

Please reply once more so we know you have read these measures.

Thank you so much for your help. Even if the problem was resolved prior to your help, I now have a LOT of cleaning tools, and along the way they found 10 or so additional problems, so thanks again. :tazz:
