Good morning. I have followed your instructions for removal of Malware so far and am at the HiJack this scan point. Also the Ewido software keeps popping up with the same threat id'd in the report even though I responded "Clean".

Thanks for any help given. Reports follow:

Hello Klow46 and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have, the most dreaded Vundo infection. Let’s see how we get on with it.

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • Please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
    • C:\WINDOWS\Fonts\dvdvss.dl
  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
  • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED: O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {827DC836-DD9F-4A68-A602-5812EB50A834} - C:\WINDOWS\Fonts\dvdvss.dll
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {8E13DDE1-E013-47ec-9C4C-27C2F78BDD26} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkhfe.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: dvdvss - C:\WINDOWS\Fonts\dvdvss.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: jkhfe - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\jkhfe.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: mfcbin - C:\WINDOWS\Web\Wallpaper\mfcbin.dll
  • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
  • Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
  • Once your machine reboots please post a new HijackThis log as well as the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Please continue with the fix for both users.

This means that you have to logon as both users and run the fix.

Yes, please do. That is weird!

Please note that the file has a dll suffix not just dl.

That last HJT log appears a little short on running processes. Can I safely assume that you scanned in safe mode, which doesn't allow many items in start-up? If so, please scan again in normal mode and post the log.

Hello again.

What happened to all the bad guys? They've mostly gone without a fight. I don't like it one bit.! Please confirm this is a scan of the same user as before.

Please visit Kaspersky for an online scan. Please post the log in your reply.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\msjava.dll (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Sun Java Console - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\msjava.dll (file missing)
O16 - DPF: {4CC35DAD-40EA-4640-ACC2-A1A3B6FB3E06} (NeoterisSetup Control) - https://tjxn.tjxcos....oterisSetup.cab

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Please now reboot

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

Hello again

I am still not happy, but if this part goes OK, I'll stand to be convinced. After you've run Killbox, I want to look beneath the surface, just to be safe.

The Killbox has 3 different settings, if the first doesn't zap them try the other two.

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

*Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
*In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\jkhfe.dll
C:\HJT\backups\backup-20050902-124928-273.dll

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt..

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Please download and run Silent Runners

* Please right click this link and choose save (link) as to download:Silent Runners.
* Save it to the desktop.
* Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
* You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done yet, just let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
* Once you receive the prompt "All Done!", double-click on the new text file on the desktop and copy that entire log and paste it here.

*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

Also could I have a HJT log for the other user please?

Many thanks -- Keith

Hello again Keith

Silent Runners log is negative. Just a couple of entries on HJT log for second user.

I am still very suspicious of Vundo going so easily, so as a test to see if it was really defeated, I'm going to ask you to search for and delete some files. They will all be in the same folder but they will have different suffixes.

Please let me know what you find. Search for: ssvdvd

Please login as user 2
