Hi, GTG,

When I open an IE browser, it keeps trying to refresh to toolbar.desktoptraffic.net instead of taking me to my homepage. How can I get this off my computer? I just got a new hard drive put on and before I've had a chance to get NAV and windows security updates on my computer, I've been attacked! Furthermore, for some reason I can't even get an internet connection... not sure if it's because my ISP blocked my connection for broadcasting malicious code or not. What is this thing anyway? Virus? Trojan? Spyware?

I had a similar problem earlier today with it trying to refresh to badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com, but I cleared that out and then on came this new problem. Here is my HJT log, but again, I can't download any security updates or anti-virus stuff. I can't even put netscape on my computer to dl that stuff because it seems I have no connection... any suggestions?

Hi, again,

I have since downloaded CWShredder and it removed whatever it was that was highlighted in my previous post, C:\WINDOWS\conscorr.exe (sneaky bugger).

Here is my newest HTJ log after a fresh reboot and having run Ad-Aware 6.0 [unupdated, as I can't get on the web ], Spybot - S&D 1.3 and CWS.

Side note: Ad-Aware and Spybot keep picking up the same problems after every reboot, even though I delete them after running the programs.

I appreciate any help anyone can give me!

Thanks for your help. Those fixes seemed to take away the toolbar.desktoptraffic.net problem, but now the browser keeps refreshing to something on aimtoday.com. I've never previously had a problem with AIM... do I need to uninstall it?

Run Hijack This again and get rid of surfside kick like he instructed. Also get rid of the file just like admin. suggested.

Download Ad-aware from: http://www.geekstogo...n=download&id=5

Install the program and launch it.

First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files.

Next, we need to configure Ad-aware for a full scan.

-> Click on the Gear icon (second from the left) to access the preferences/settings window

1. In the General window make sure the following are selected:

• Automatically save log-file
• Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
• Safe Mode (always request confirmation)

2. Click on the Scanning button on the left and select :

• Scan Within Archives
• Scan Active Processes
• Scan Registry
• Deep Scan Registry
• Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
• Scan my Hosts file
• Under Click here to select drives + folders, choose:
• All of your hard drives

-> Click on the Advanced button on the left and select:

• Include additional process information
• Include additional file information
• Include environment information
• Include additional object details

-> Click the Tweak button and select:

• Under the Scanning Engine:
  • Unload recognized processes during scanning
  • Include basic Ad-aware settings in logfile
  • Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile
• Under the Cleaning Engine:
  • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot

-> Click on Proceed to save the settings.

-> Click Start and on the next screen choose Activate in-depth Scan at the bottom of the page and then choose:

• Use Custom Scanning Options

-> Click Next and Ad-aware will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected.

-> Save the log file when it asks and then click Finish

-> When finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose Select All from the drop down menu and click Next).

Please delete your temporary files. Double Click My Computer (WinXP: Navigate to Start --->My Computer)
You will see an icon representing your harddrive (most likely C: Drive) Right Click on the hard drive icon and click Properties at the
bottom of the fly out window. One the very first tab (General) you will see a button labeled "Disk Cleanup"...click that button.
Make sure the following are checked:
Downloaded Program Files
Temporary Internet Files and
Recycle Bin
Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.


-> Reboot your computer.

Sorry for the delay in response... the computer took the holidays off

An update on my situation: it appears desktoptraffic.net stuff is gone. I've uninstalled AIM and AIM toolbar, and it looks like the last problem with the browser trying to refresh to aimtoday.com is done. I've now installed AOL 8.0 (I'm stuck on dial-up for a while), and when I try to open up an IE window, the toolbar reads:

Thanks, Coachwife, I thought it looked ok, too, but I deleted the stuff you suggested, and have installed Norton Internet Security. I can't activate the software because I can't pull up any kind of browser. I guess it's some kind of corrupted windows file. Here's my latest HJT. I'll keep searching for the answer, but if you come across anything that might be handy, I'd really appreciate it!

Ok, it seems the problem is fixed! I no longer get the res:C\WINDOWS\System32\shdoclc.dll/navcancl.htm message in my browser bar.

It seemed my hosts file was missing altogether... weird. But I downloaded the Winsock repair tool and it fixed it all up for me by creating a new hosts file. I got the file from the Purdue website - http://web.ics.purdue.edu/~shershbe/

I've noticed that this post as been read almost 1800 times. It's really sad that so many people are having the same problems as I had. We need to find a way to get these malware freaks strung up by the FCC.
