Hello

I have redone my friends computer, "no other choice" could not even get online.

But now all I need to do is download the sp packs etc. But I keep getting this warning:

Windows has blocked this software because it cant verify the publisher
Name: ?Linkid=39204
Publisher: Unknown

I dont know anything about XP but learning as I go. But cant figure out what to do to allow this to download.

Please help so I can get her puter back to her.

Thanks!

Make sure you download the updates using Internet Explorer because other browsers will not work. Go to tools and click windows updates. And usually when you download updates, a pop up will come up asking you to install something. Make sure you click yes to install it because you need that little addon to install the updates.

Ok, went through IE for the updates, arrived at MS, it did a scan to see what all the puter is needing, and then got this:

Genuine Windows Hypertext Application

Microsoft ® HTML Application Host Security Warning

Validate Windows Using an Alternate Method

Your current browser cannot run the ActiveX control required by the genuine Windows validation process.
Let's try validating a different way:

Click Validate Now to run the genuine Windows validation application.
When prompted, click Open or Run this program from its current location.

Validate Now

And when I did, it came back to the same warning as before:

Windows has blocked this software because it cant verify the publisher
Name: ?Linkid=39204
Publisher: Unknown

Open Internet Explorer
On the menu-bar, click Tools -> Internet Options.
Click on Security tab, next make sure Internet zone is selected, then click on the Custom Level button.
In the Security Settings Windows, under ActiveX Controls and plugins, make sure the following are enabled:
Run ActiveX Controls and Plugins
Binary and script behaviours.

Also we need to check if the Windows Genuine Advantage BHO is'nt disabled, follow the steps below:
Open Internet Explorer
On the menu-bar, click Tools -> Manage Add-ons.
In the Show drop-down menu, choose Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer. Scroll down to Windows Genuine Advantage, check if it is enabled.

:tazz: Hey Darth

I did the first 1/2 and the Windows Genuine Advantage, is enabled.

I was talking to a friend of mine that redoes puters and builds them, to see what he thought, and he told me that I shouldnt download all the fixes from MS.

He said that it causes more issues than needed. Dunno, whats your thought?

But what to do now after I did everything above?

Try downloading updates again?

Some of the Windows Update are important as they are patches for security vulnerablities in Windows.

Found out that, this is nothing but the temporary file to install "Windows Genuine Advantage", seems like its installing again.
Try validating Windows from the following link:
http://www.microsoft...hyValidate.aspx.

Also, check the following key in the registry (Start->Run, type: regedit):
Goto: HKey_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\
Check if the value of NoWindowsUpdate(if it exists) is not 1.

Also, lets try re-registring some dlls:
Start -> Run.
Type: regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
Press <enter>.

Start -> Run.
Type: regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
Press <enter>.
