[Darius-PL]

Hi, while surfing on the web I got infected and this is what happened:

-> NAV detected a Trojan Horse on my comp,
-> two files were reported as infected: hclean32.exe and logo_big.exe,
-> some crappy toolbar was installed in my IE with links / groups of links: remove toolbar (which ofc redirects to some website), search, gambling, internet, pharmacy, finance, insurance, adult),
-> an icon WareOut appeared on my desktop,
-> closing any window made a click sound now which it didn't before the infection.

I tried CWShredder, Ad-aware, Spybot S&D, Ewido, Killbox, Trojan Hunter to get rid of this infection.

NAV detects only hclean32.exe (logo_big.exe no more) but ONLY after reboot - and even then, not every time. Otherwise, the virus scan reveals nothing, also in safe mode. I removed WareOut. I also managed to kill the toolbar and the script greying out my toolbar options. The remedy here was Trojan Hunter.

Occasionally, an info "baloon" (note the wrong spelling) appears on my taskbar prompting me to "fix the problem of bad virus protection status".

Another window appears very rarely prompting me to protect my computer from malicious software that has been detected by my firewall (this message is labeled Windows Security Center).

The goddamn hclean32.exe seems to be stealth and immune to everything I try. Killbox didn't help, safe mode didn't help, regedit finds nothing, scanners find nothing.

One more strange thing: there is a new directory called !Submit on my system disk but even though it's displayed as empty, I cannot delete it. What is this?

BTW, what does this trojan actually do? It seems to be quite common now but I'm not even aware of the real threat behind it.

Firstly, I need you to create folder to the C:\Program Files\ - directory. Name it as HiJackThis, or HJT.
When you have created the new folder, please move HiJackThis.exe to that folder from the current location you have it. This is important so that HiJackThis can create backups if necessary. Then post a fresh HiJackThis log and we'll get started.

Close HiJackThis.

Now lets check some settings on your system.

• Go to Start > Control Panel and double-click on Network Connections
• Then right click on your Default Connection
  • Usually Local Area Connection for Cable and DSL
• Left click on Properties.
• Click the Networking tab.
• Double-Click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item.
• Select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS Servers Automatically.
• Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.

Make sure to reboot and post back a new HiJackThis log into this topic.

Some minor deviations from what you posted:

- under local area connection I don't have a "Networking" tab, just "General", "Authentication" and "Advanced". TCP/IP is in the first one. The option Obtain DNS Servers Automatically was checked. I think this is OK and it doesn't make a difference whether I have the networking tab or not

- the third HJT entry listed in the first log (beginning with CF0) wasn't there when I ran HJT to fix them. I had 5 only.


Anyway, my system at the moment detects nothing. I keep my fingers crossed!

Some precautions here though..

Let's clear out your restore points now.

Disable System Restore;

1. Click Start > Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer
2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Check the "Turn off System Restore"
5. Click Apply. An message shows up.
6. Click "Yes" to do this.
7. Confirm with "Ok".

Reboot.

Enable System Restore;

1. Click Start.
2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Uncheck the "Turn off System Restore" check box.
5. Click Apply, and then click "OK".

System Restore will now be active again. Be sure to set a new restore point.

Here's some tips for future to prevent spyware;

Detect and Remove Programs:

• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

Prevention Programs:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed. (My favourite)
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

Other necessary Programs:

• AntiVirus Program <= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kaspersky, this is a must have.
• Firewall <= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
• More Secure Browser <= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox.

Thanks! To be honest, I had System Restore disabled by default... I've just enabled it, I guess after all it's useful

I have NAV + Sygate as my default protection measures.

As for Service Pack 2, I didn't get it because I heard it caused some serious problems with P2P, and I use eMule quite frequently. Well, maybe it's just a matter of appropriate configuration of SP2.
