When i open IE there are two annoying search bars that i cannot get rid of...one is at the top and one at the bottom. I also have unwanted links appearing in MY Favorites. And, every so often, IE freezes due to a "problem with Dr Watson's post mortem debugger"--whatever THAT is! please help! i ran Adaware, Spybot, Microsoft anti-spy, and a Symantec virus scan. When i go to Add/Remove Programs there is something called Window Search. I cannot get rid of it. When i try to uninstall, it asks me to enter numbers in a certain order. I do this and everything freezes!

Here is my Hijack This! log:

Hi jaxx02 and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

1. Go to Geeks to Go
. Click on My Controls at the top right hand corner of the window. (make sure you have signed in first)
. In the left hand column, click "View Topics"
. If you click on the title of your post, you will be taken there

2. Also, while at the My Controls page, check the box to the right of your post and then scroll down.
.Where it says "unsubscribe" click the pull-down menu and select "immediate email notification"

3. Would you please repost your log single-spaced instead of double-spaced as it is now.

To remove the double spacing in your log, please do the following:
  • Please go to Start >> Run... and type notepad.exe
  • Hit OK.
  • Now go to Format and uncheck WordWrap.
  • Close Notepad.

Regards,

Now we are going to make sure that this LOP infection is not running in other profiles on your computer. With this infection, every user's profile can carry this infection.

* Please click this link to download Silent Runners.

* Save it to the desktop.

* Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.

* You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done yet, just let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)

* Once you receive the prompt "All Done!", double-click on the new text file on the desktop and copy that entire log and paste it here.

*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

Regards,

Trevuren

First we will try and find some of the elements of the infection. If they are present, I will provide the necessary directions to remove them in the next post.
  • Open notepad
  • Copy and paste the text contained in the Code box into the new Notepad file:

    dir %Windir%\tasks /a h > files.txt
    notepad files.txt
  • Save this as findjobs.bat , choose to save it as *all files and place it on your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on op findjobs.bat and post the content of the textfile you get in your next reply.

Your log looks good. If you have no more malware-related problems that you are aware of, just give me the OK and we can start the final but essential cleanup procedures.

Things are looking good. The toolbars are gone, as are the links in My Favorites. The only thing is i still have this "Window Search" in my list of programs. Is this a Windows program or is it trying to look like one?

Thanks for all your help thus far!

What list of programs?

If you think it may be from Microsoft, right click and chose Properties and look at the details. If it is truely from MS, it will be written down.

Please get back to me with the answer

If I go Add/Remove Programs it is there. I don't see it anywhere else. I cannot see properties for any of the items on this list. However, the other Windows Programs have a link that says "support information" and this one does not. Also it says Window Search not Windows, with an 's'. That is why i think it is suspicious. Also when i try to remove it, i have to put in some numbers in a certain order and when i do that it freezes the Add/Remove Programs screen to where the only way i can close it is to Ctrl Alt Delete and End Task. If it helps, the window where i have to type in these numbers says 'eetrlldrh' at the top.

If it's not harmful then that is fine, but i just want to be sure.

Thanks!
