new computer, can't print

I recently purchased a new Mac computer. It recognizes my HP940c printer, but when I try to print anything nothing happens. In the printers folder, it says "opening printer connection" and then "printing stopped." When I try to restart the printing it does the same thing. I've made sure everything is plugged in and have tried restarting the computer and even printing a different type of document but it always does the same thing. Any suggestions??
