I've got a problem with random alpha numaric named programs ie: WO1D77.EXE, LEF5AA.EXE, G0C656.EXE and many more that I keep getting an error like this one that's on there now:

PH4071.EXE

PH4071.EXE has encountered a problem and needs to close.
We are sorry for the inconvenience.

If you were in the middle of something the information you were working on might be lost

Please tel Microsoft about this problem

The guys at Tomcoyote couldn't help me ( Thread: http://forums.tomcoy...showtopic=44663 ) and a friend at work said this site helped them with some probems he was having.

Here's my latest highjack log

Hi darrellinceres, welcome to GeeksToGo

As you've been told in the other forum, your log looks clean..

But the filenames you are giving are all random names files and they can't be good..

Let's cleanup you temporary files, empty the prefetch folder and then check for rootkits..

First, download and install CleanUp! but do not run it yet.

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, if it does go ahead and reboot.

Download F-Secure Blacklight (blbeta.exe) to your desktop.
- Double click on blbeta.exe to run the program. Accept the user agreement.
- Leave "Scan through windows explorer" checked.
- Click Scan.
After the scan finishes, click on Next, then Exit.

BlackLight will create a log on your desktop with the name "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log". Please post that log.

So no rootkits then..

Any changes after running the Cleanup program? I was thinking maybe something running from temp files might be a culprit..

Also let me see a Startup List:

Create a Startup List[/u]
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the "Config..." button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Check off the 2 boxes next to the Box that says "Generate StartupList log"
  • Click on the button "Generate StartupList log"
  • Copy and past the StartupList from the notepad into your next post

Does this entry mean anything to you? Could it belong to one of the programs you're running?

\\Wh_appssrv1\HLPSTRCS\SCAN\inventory.bat

and this one was in one of the logs you posted in the other forum:

\Wh_appssrv1\HLPSTRCS\SCAN\HpAudit.exe

Please make a search for Wh_appssrv1 on your computer and report back what you found..a Google search for Wh_appssrv1 or HLPSTRCS or even HpAudit.exe reveal definitely no results..

No I don't have a clue, I think it shows up on a dos cmd splash screen when I start my computer just as windows starts. I'm not in the office right now so I can't get to my laptop, the one with the problem, but I'll check it out first thing in the morning. I have all the programs that are installed on it in my office also so I'll look thru them. It doesn't look like anything that I remember installing but :tazz: there's probably a lot of things that get installed that we never see

If I can't find it how can we test it? Can we temporarily disable it?

We could make a regfix to stop it, but first I'd like to know what it is..and the full path..if you find the folder look also what else is in it..

That helpstar is a legitimate program..

Let's try a different approach..

When you get the error reporting window, there should be a link on that window saying view details or more info or something of a similar context..

Post that information for me..

Also make a note of the filename..

Then make sure you can view hidden files and folders..

Next click on My Computer.
Go to Tools > Folder Options.
Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked.
Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extensions for known file types."
Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

Having done that, make a search of the filename on your computer..

Go to Start > Search and under "More advanced search options".
Make sure there is a check by "Search System Folders" and "Search hidden files and folders" and "Search system subfolders"

See if you can locate the file..if success right click on the file and choose properties and post all the information on the properties tab.

Let's see how this goes..

When I opened the C:\WINDOWS\Temp folder containing the HMAF02.EXE file before the OB2871.EXE error there was 5 items in there:

History folder
Temporary Internet folder
WebshotsTemp folder
~DF7391.tmp ( TMP file )
HMAF02.EXE ( with the little dog icon )
T30DebugLogFile.txt

After acknowlaging the HMAF02.EXE error and tracing the OB2871.EXE error I opened the same folder ( C:\WINDOWS\Temp ) and found the HMAF02.exe file had been replaced with the OB2871.EXE file ( with the same little dog icon ). When I aknowlaged the OB2871.EXE error ( clicked on the do not send button ) the file disapears from the Temp folder no where to be found. A new search for OB2871 or HMAF02 only results in the .pf files listed above

The icon looks like a little brown dog running. Doesn't look like anything that I've seen before or a icon to any of the programs that I own.

Also I did a search for *.* by the created date from 3/15/2005 to 3/15/2005 ( using the modifided date from the program properties and found 2 files listed by that date:

A0014673.exe in folder C:\system Volume Information\_restore{987E0331-0F01-427C-7A2E4AABF84D}\RP166

udhisapi[57].xml in folder C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\systemprofile\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\8DARKL23

I don't know if they are of any importance, I'm just fishing. I did a simulare search by date modified and got 74 files. All but the XML file listed above seem to be part of the Trend Micro Office scan program but I did find another program with the little dog icon that shows up with the errored programs.

It's called OfcDog.exe and it is in folder: C:\program Files\Trend Micro\OfficeScan Client. Could the problem be a corrupt file in the office scan program? I've heard that some virus programs attack antivirus programs.
When I opened the folder there appears to be duplicated copies of all the OfcDog files. ie: OfcDog.exe and OfcDog(2).exe.
There are three files and three duplicated files for OcfDog:
OfcDog.exe
OfcDog.dll
OfcDogLib.dll
And there dups
OfcDog(2).exe
OfcDog(2).dll
OfcDogLib(2).dll
I checked on my desktop computer that is running the same software and the three OfcDog program is on it as well but without the duplicates.

Mabey we're on to something here

Nice work :tazz:

Yes, antivirus programs and firewalls are known to create temp files for various tasks.

My guess is somehow these temp files are being written to the Prefetch folder and this is causing the errors. Prefetch is for loading your frequently used files at startup for ease of use.

The .hdmp and .mdmp files are the error reporting files created by Windows. The .pf files are the prefetch files.

Since the icon matches with the Officescan files, they should belong to Trend Micro.

Locate and read the

C:\Docum~1\DHENLE~1\Temp\WER8dab.dir00\appcompat.txt (or whichever is the current one)

appcompat.txt indicates an application compatibility error. There might be more info in that text file..

but as you said, it looks like we found the source of the problem.. you may come to the point that an uninstall/reinstall may be needed..but before that it may be a good idea to contact TrendMicro support and ask them..even you could provide a link to this thread while doing that..they should be able to tell what the problem is..

Regards,

Armodeluxe
