A few weeks back I opened up the casing to my lil' 200$ computer to find out the specifics on the ATX board, Power supply, Intel Processor, etc. (Wanted to know what was up because I plan to rebuild the computer.) Since then I've been having issues. Just as I first found the components installed on the motherboard, I put them back exactly. but then problems arised.

1. the HDD/CD Driver (Whichever it is) doesn't read at all. It's installed properly on the motherboard (No orange light constantly staying on) but it's not installed in Control Panel and I can't get anything to read, comps not picking it up at all.

2. Mouse has been going haywire, opening things, scrolling over my start menu like a rabid dog. (Read a few cases of the 'possessed mouse' and since then, have replaced the mouse with a new one - No problems thus far.)

3. Reset/Power buttons don't work. Reset button glows red Power button unresponsive as well as Reset button. (I believe I may have placed the lil'square thingies wrong on the motherboard. so far I managed to get the floppy drive and the Monitor to respond on start up.

4. In order to start up my computer, I have to let the Power supply sit untouched for roughly twenty to thirty minutes before I can turn it on from the switch in the back of the computer. I keep the computer running to avoid that problem but when it shuts down from power shortages and such, it's a hassle.

Anyone know how to fix these problems? Please respond. I'd be very greatful.

Hello, Llanos19.

1. It sounds like you mean the cd drive, is that correct? If it is that one, than do these steps.

Open the case, ground yourself by constantly holding one hand if possible on the metal chassis so you don't damage any components from ESD.

Make sure the cable is secure on both the mobo and cd-rom, and also make sure the 4 pin power molex is in securely. If they are, then make sure you don't have the cable in backwards on the cd-rom drive, some cables still let you do that.

2. (If the power/reset buttons don't work then how do you turn it on and come up with the other problems you have listed?)

Do you know exactly which motherboard you have? If so, that would help. Almost all motherboards nowadays have the pins labeled, see if you can see some very small print that says where they go, it’s usually right under where they do. Also, try switching around the pins for those specific two, although those should work in either direction.

3. Did you mess with the heatsink/fan at all? If you did it's very possible it's overheating now, or maybe the 24 pin/4pin power connector to the mobo is loose?

That's about all I can suggest without more info.

Well, when my computer shuts off, I just flip the switch off in the back of the tower. I wait about twenty minutes before flipping the switch to turn it on again. (That's the only way I'm able to boot my computer, and I'm on it right now.) The power button and reset button in the front of the tower don't respond. I could push them all day and nothing would happen.

Posted Image

On, or rather, around my Intel thingy that looks exactly like that, there's no fan or anything. The only fan I know of, that's clearly visible within the tower, is the one on the power supply (115v).

The motherboard, I have yet to find out exactly what type that is, unless there's a way you can find out just by looking at it. Other than that, I'm lost as to what model it is.

Llanos19...

Let's address this mess one thing at a time......

Power/Reset Switches Your Front Panel connector is not connected properly...that's why the switches aren't working. The connectors on the Motherboard are a bunch of pins on the lower right of the motherboard. ( ::::::: ) and they are labeled (usually), but the print is very small. The front panel wires with the little square connectors on the end are also labeled. The labels will vary by manufacturer so the best bet is to download the manual for your motherboard.

Hardware To determine what hardware you have (motherboard, modem, network card, etc) download Everest Home Edition HERE. It will tell you all you need to know about your computer. Install Everest and run it then attach a copy of the log to this thread and we can help you straighten things out.

...Okay. No help with that. In any case, I managed to fix my CD ROM and most (if not all) of the pins on the MOBO.

Now there's a new problem.

While doing regular searches on the web, recently, something called popcorn72.exe appeared on my computer. I installed and ran SpyDoctor S & D Remover and it cleaned out all of the potential threats on my computer but did nothing to get rid of the popcorn thing.

When I reboot my computer, and try to click on anything on my desktop, it freezes and when it doesn't freeze, the mouse turns into an hourglass and spins for hours with no end result.

Anyone know how to help with this problem? My computer was running fine before I executed the SpyDoctor program. On my browser, instead of yahoo, I'd be directed to some weird page named: C:\WINDOWS\system32\msblank.html, which then takes me to Lycos and gives me information about Spyware/Adware programs (That's how I found the SpyDoctor.)

Help!

Hi Llanos19...

A classic malware infection... :tazz:

Please go to the Malware Forum and follow the instructions at the top....Especially the Start Here.

That will give you several steps that will help you clean up 70 percent of all problems by yourself. If at the end of the process you are still having difficulty--and you may not be-- post a hijackthis log in THAT forum.

If you are still having problems after getting a clean bill of health from the malware expert, please return to this thread.

PS...I've looked high and low,but have been unable to locate a diagram for hooking up your motherboard's front panel bus...sorry.

I have a new problem! Help!

...'kay, recently I installed AOL just to get their lil' McAfee virus protection :tazz: and since then I get this little annoying pop-up from them saying the following:

(btw, computer's working fine! :woot:)

The file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WININET.DLL is infected by the W32/Alemod.a.dll virus and cannot be cleaned.

When I click on "Delete the infected file" a box says "Error occured while trying to delete" and behind it, another window is there saying,

Virus Found!
File: WININET.DLL
Virus Name: W32/Alemod.a.dll
File Path: C\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32
Status: Infected

The virus "WININET.DLL" was detected but cannot be cleaned, deleted, or quarantined. We recommend that you restart your computer and use a Rescue Disk to clean the infection.

:) But I don't have any rescue disks. I bought this thing for 200 bucks.

I tried to "delete it", "quarantine it", "clean it," and even tried to "continue what I was doing" but still, McAfee pops up and again, informs me. How can I get rid of this virus without me making a mistake and blow this thing up? :)

Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks.
