I have been battling spyware for 2 weeks...hopefully this is the last of it.

I can not remove the APRPS registry key. It just keeps coming back.

And my computer keeps going into permanent hibernation when I try to.

Thanks for any help..

Here is my hijack log:

Hi cjc7,

Can you please surf to http://virusscan.jotti.org/ and upload this file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\msltochk.exe
Let me know the results.

Also could you elaborate on this bit please?

I can not remove the APRPS registry key.  It just keeps coming back.

View Post

Where did you find it?
Why you want to remove it?
What you already tried?

Thank you very much for your help.

I zeroed in on that file (MSLTOCHK.EXE) a few days ago. And after NOT finding any info at all on it through Google, etc....I deleted it with Killbox.

I did find this file:

MSLTOCHK.EXE-06223CD7.pf

here:

C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch

and uploaded it instead, but the results were OK.

As far as the APRPS key in the registry, Spy Sweeper keeps finding it as remains of the APROPOS adware, but after saying it deletes it, the KEY returns.

I can manually delete it with REGEDIT, but I hit 'F5' a few times, and the key returns, so some process is restoring it. The KEY does not return if I manually delete in SAFE mode, but will be back after re-boot.

Also, the computer will consistanly go into permanant hibernation, and I have to power down.

Here is Hijack log from today:

The HijackThis log actually looks good, but let's see what we can find.
  • Download the Registry Search Tool.
  • Unzip the contents of RegSrch.zip to a convenient location.
  • Double-click on RegSrch.vbs.
  • If you have an anti-virus installed it might prompt you about a running script. Please ignore this warning and allow the script to run.
  • In the "Enter search string (case insensitive) and click OK..." box paste this string:
    • APRPS
  • Click "OK" to search the registry for that string.
  • Wait for a few minutes while it completes the search.
  • Click "OK" to open the results in WordPad.
  • Copy and paste the entire results into your next post.
The files in the prefetch folder only tell windows where to find and how to best start certain files, so they are harmless by themselves.

Okay..

The first time I ran it, the results window popped up and the computer immediately went "to sleep." The power light goes off, but the HD light stays on...kinda strange. I have to shut it off and reboot.

Anyway, here is the result after the 2nd run...

REGEDIT4
; RegSrch.vbs © Bill James

; Registry search results for string "aprps" 9/9/2005 11:20:39 AM

; NOTE: This file will be deleted when you close WordPad.
; You must manually save this file to a new location if you want to refer to it again later.
; (If you save the file with a .reg extension, you can use it to restore any Registry changes you make to these values.)

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Aprps]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Aprps\Client]

[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-4024994690-1887795725-650978795-1003\Software\Microsoft\Search Assistant\ACMru\5604]
"000"="Aprps"

[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-4024994690-1887795725-650978795-1003\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\Regedit]
"LastKey"="My Computer\\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Aprps"

I also did a manual regedit search for ACMRU, and under the key "5603" is listed the mysterious "msltochk.exe" and also "cxtpls"

Thanks again!

MRU means Most Recently Used

In other words the entries were stored when youn looked for those items.

The only key that should be removed is:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Aprps

Assuming that is the one you were trying to get rid off all along, we'll have to look for related files.

Download WinPFind.zip and unzip the contents to the C:\ folder.

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Locate the c:\winpfind\winpfind.exe file and double-click it to run it. Now click the Start Scan button to begin the scan.

When the scan is complete reboot normally and post the WinPFind.txt file (located in the WinPFind folder)

Here are the results of the scan...

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Got it.

There is one file I'd like to have a closer look at.
Can you surf to http://www.thespykil...x.php?topic=5.0
Follow the instructions there to upload:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\mf3pat.exe

Copy the part in bold below into notepad and save it as reppid.reg
Set Filetype to "all files"

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\fgknmsst]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer\Run]
"mf3pat"=-

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Aprps]

Doubleclick that file and confirm you want to merge it with the registry.

*Click Here to download Killbox by Option^Explicit.
*Extract the program to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.
*In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\jdkne.dll
C:\WINDOWS\javom.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\mf3pat.exe

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

Then reboot your computer and check if the regsitry entry stayed away this time.

I could not find that file (mf3pat.exe) on the HD at all. Did a full search of C.

I followed the other steps, and the APRPS key is now gone, and SpySweeper does not report any spyware. First time in 3 weeks!! Thank you!!!

Unfortunately, the computer still goes into sleep mode at random times...with no way to wake it.

Open the Windows XP Event Viewer (Start—Control Panel—(Performance and Maintenance)—Administrative Tools—Event Viewer).

See if you can find any warnings/errors in the logs just before a time when the computer went into hibernation.

You can also try and disable Hibernation completely and see what happens.
Here's how:
1. Go to Start> Settings> Control Panel.
2. Select the Power Options Icon
3. Click on the Hibernation icon
4. Uncheck Enable Hibernation
