I have a Winfixer 2005 infestation (arrgh). Actually, it's a colleagues computer I'm helping to troubleshoot. Ran Ad-aware, Spybot S&D, Norton AV 2005 (fully updated). These caught a lot of other stuff, some unwanted toolbars, and the number of annoying popups definitely decreased, but still get the annoying winfixer download window on startup, and the unremovable icon on the desktop (keeps reappearing). Today, before posting ran cleanup, ad-aware, spybot, eido, and trojanhunter.... still there. Little help, please?

Thanks for your help, LostAccount. Since some time went by (you guys were pretty busy), I read up a bit, and deleted the "NetInstaller" key and the file it was pointing to, which seemed to keep the WinFixer pop up from appearing each time the computer was restarted. Your new log is clean. How is the computer running now?

Well, the answer to that is a little complicated.

From the standpoint of adware activity, the computer looks clean. There are no longer any extra pop-ups, unnecessary toolbars were removed by my original passes of Spybot search and destroy, Ad-Aware, and so forth. The 'Winfixer download' pop-up no longer appears either (great sigh of relief).

The complicated part is that after several passes through Spybot search and destroy, ad aware, and Norton Internet security, (and upgrading to SP2 of windows XP) all of which took place before I posted to this board, a number of odd problems started to occur, which included the computer no longer recognizing Microsoft Office as being installed on the system, and the msinfo32.exe program malfunctioning (gives an error message of "Windows management instrumentation files may be moved or missing"). As best I can tell, these problems started as a consequence of the adware removal process, the SP2 upgrade, or possibly when I installed Norton Internet security as part of my attempt to fix the system and protected from further infestations. The removal of winfixer, the last of the adware on the system, has not fixed the system problems, although the problem with Microsoft office was solved by reinstalling Office. Microsoft's technical support has been very diligently trying to help with the msinfo problem (in part because it was noted after the upgrade to SP2). For now, I plan to carry on with them on that issue. Naturally, if you've encountered the kind of problem above, I welcome your comments.

Once again, thanks for all your help. I consider myself pretty computer savvy, but these problems have been quite an education. If I had more time on my hands, I'd enroll in geekU. You folks are performing a great service.

What do you mean by this? Please give more details (error message, details etc.) What version of Office are you using?

For the System Information Tool (msinfo32.exe):

Go to Start>Run and type in:

services.msc

Press enter.

Make sure these services are started and have their startup types set to automatic:

• Event Log
• Windows Management Instrumentation
• Remote Procedure Call (RPC)

If not:

• Right-Click on the non-functioning service.
• Click on 'Properties'
• Select the 'General' tab
• Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side on the 'Start-up Type' box
• From the drop-down menu, click on 'Automatic'
• Click the 'Apply' tab, then click 'OK'
• Restart

Try running msinfo32 again by going to Start>Run and typing it in.

Thanks for your suggestions, LostAccount, but we already tried that (as I indicated, I've been working on this one with Microsoft tech support for about 10 days) without success, plus several other fixes. Since they've been helping me with that particular problem, I'll carry on with them, but thanks for the offer of help. If we hit a wall, I'll be back. Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we at SWI are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers.

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows, including the latest version of Internet Explorer. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are ZoneAlarm, Kerio, or Sygate.
