I use Windows Xp, sometimes had problems connecting with DSL. The tech there
directed me to their web page which included instructions in running virus checks in safe mode. Bit Defender picked up the Exploit and 2 instances of Backdoor.Landis but couldn't remove them. I googled them but for removal tools but was unsuccessful. I use AVG, but although in the last few days it had identified a flurry of viruses and removed them, it didn't pick up these ones. I have run all the anti-viruses and Spybot and Evedo as advised on GeeksTOGO but got confused when I got to Hijack This. I don't know where to save it to, and don't understand about notepad.

A month or so ago I had problems with Internet Explorer so I removed it and now just use MSN. I kept getting error messages.

Now I get messages: "C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe" Windows cannot find, and
the necessary service "Automatic Updates is aunavailable, Error 0x80070422 and
"Windows cannot find: C:\WINDOWS\system32\Kcxbadzt\csrss.exe"
I have Norton antivirus installed and got messages that there was an error so I removed that too and couldn't install it again.

I bought this Pentium 4, laptop in 2003 and I am on my third hard drive. The technician just replaces them and says he doesn't know what the problem is. The last time my son was downloading something and it crashed, so they lent me this hard drive until he can get a replacement through warranty. I don't have the money to buy a new one. I would appreciate any assistance.

Let's do a little manual clean up and then finish with a scan that may show us a little more.

Please make sure that you can View Hidden Files

• Click Start -> My Computer
• Select Tools -> Folder options
• Select the View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled.
• Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked.

For more info on how to show hidden files click here.



Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

* if you have trouble getting into Safe mode go here for more info.




Once in Safe mode, delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist):

C:\WINDOWS\uzcdedaj.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\kcxkbadzt <-- delete everything within this folder and then delete the folder.


Delete your temp files

• Navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder.
  • Open the Temp folder
  • Select Edit -> Select All
  • Select Edit -> Delete(or press the delete button on your keyboard) to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.
• Navigate to the C:\Windows\Prefetch folder.
  • Open the Prefetch folder
  • Select Edit -> Select All
  • Select Edit -> Delete(or press the delete button on your keyboard) to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.
• Click Start -> Run and type %temp% in the Run box.
  
  • Select Edit -> Select All
  • Select Edit -> Delete(or press the delete button on your keyboard) to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.
• Click Start -> Control Panel -> Internet Options.
  • Select the General tab
  • Under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files".
  • Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK.
  • Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button.
  • Click Apply then OK.
• Empty the Recycle Bin.

Reboot back to normal mode.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

• The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
• Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  
• Now click on Scan Settings
• In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
  
  • Scan Options:
  Scan Archives
  Scan Mail Bases
• Click OK
• Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
• This will program will start and scan your system.
• The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
• Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
• Save the file to your desktop.
• Copy and paste that information in your next post along with a new hijackthis log.

Sam, I followed your instructions and got into safe mode and then wasn't sure how to get into the files and directories to delete those two. So, that is as far as I got as I am not too comfortable fooling around with a computer cuz i don't know what I am doing. Up to that point tho, I found your directions elementary enough for me.

And when I started the scan in Hijack this a message came up:
Unexpected error in SUBGETLONG.exe
Report to [email protected] mentioning what I was doing and what version of windows I am using.

Also another message: Unable to delete file
04-startup:crss.links?
and to shut down thru Program Manager which I tried to do except a message said it was a critical process so I could not perform that action.

yikes, this computer is haunted. I copies the files to be checked for hijack and then went to close it and a message said the contents had changed and did i want to save a copy? What I really want is a drink.

Yeah, me too.

Go ahead and run the Kaspersky online virus scan following the directions in my previous post.

When it's done reboot your computer and post a new hijackthis log and the info from the Kaspersky scan. Then we'll see what we're really up against here.

SO....Kaspersky says 16 viruses, 24 infected objects. Hmmmm I am speechless, so much for those anitvirus programs I've been running including my newest, AVG.
(In my add/delete programs there is a Norton 2005 that I could not download and can't seem to uninstall it either although I was just able to succussfully uninstall the Norton update icon this time.) When this hard drive was put in a few months ago the tech installed a copy of Norton and I used it until I got the error messages. I did buy Norton 2004 Systemworks last year and was trying to install it when the tech's copy failed and update it but installation kept failing.

It's not as bad as it looks. Most of the viruses that Kaspersky found were in your system restore files or already quarantined by Norton.

Let's put aside your problems with Norton for now and come back to them once you are clean of malware.

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to this line. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.

• Install ewido security suite
• When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
• Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
• The program will now go to the main screen

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

• On the left hand side of the main screen click update
• Then click on Start Update

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.

Once the updates are installed do the following:

• Click on scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
• When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
• Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
• Click Save report.
• Save the report .txt file to your desktop.

Now close ewido security suite.


Reboot your computer and post a new hijackthis log and the log from Ewido.

Now, what anti-virus would you suggest? Should I try to install Norton again or just download one?
I downloaded Microsoft's spyware that is supposed to (I thinK) stop spyware instead of allowing it in and deleting it later?

I'm not a big fan of Norton for many reasons. A good alternative that is free is AVG. If you are willing to shell out a few bucks take a look at Trend Micro or Kaspersky.

Microsoft Antispyware is very good also for spyware. I also recommend Adaware and Spybot. Just don't run them at the same time in the background. Pick one only to use for real time protection and just run manual scans with the others on a regular basis.

Here's some other suggestions for you.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

• Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

• Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
• Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

• Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  
  
• Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

• Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. Remember I said this was haunted? I just checked and my firewall was turned off and I have never turned it off. Hmmm

Also, when I first started having the problems (when I got messages that my anti-virus was turned off), whenever I tried to use the Internet Explorer shortcut I got an error message, so I deleted it. It has been off the desktop for about a month now. So, now I only have MSN Explorer. Have you ever heard of that and how do I get Internet Explorer again?

What firewall are you using?

Internet Explorer is still on your computer. All you did was remove the shortcut. Close all windows so you can see your desktop. Now click Start and then All Programs. You should IE listed there somewhere. To restore the shortcut just click it once with your mouse and drag it to your desktop. Release it with your mouse and your shortcut should be created.
