Hi,
My computer has been infected and I cannot seem to clean it. I have run Ad-Aware and Spybot and get messages that the CoolWWWSearch and Blue Error Nuke viruses are present. :tazz:
Sometimes, when I run Spybot, it shows no infection but then I run under my wife's login and it appears there.
I have run all the steps that you recommend but I am still having problems (i.e. infection is still there).
I am at my wits end and one step away from chuking it all in and just reformatting my hard disk!!!
Please Help...

Hi CrazyHorse and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Excal and I will be helping you.

I can see that you have some malware issues. This maybe a few step process in removing it. I encourage you to stick with it and follow my directions as closely as possible so as to avoid complicating the problem further.

DOWNLOAD PROGRAMS

Download and install CleanUp! Here
*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

We will use this program later.

THE FIX

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

1. Click this link to be sure you can view hidden files.

2. Ensure you are NOT connected to the internet.

3. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

4. Open up and run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan when it ask if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK
  • When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

5. Close all browsers, windows and unneeded programs.

6. Open HiJack and do a scan.

7. Put a Check next to the following items:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Telecoms Center] telcoms.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Sp2 Personal Firewall] sp2firewall.exe

8. click the Fix Checked box

9. Please remove just the files from the following paths using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\svcnt32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\telcoms.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\sp2firewall.exe

10. Run the program CleanUp!

11. Reboot into normal mode and please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

First off, thanks for helping me out with this - I was at my wits end.

Okay, ran the Ewido scan again but found nothing.
Ran Hijackthis and removed the files as requested.
The 3 files in step 9 were not present.
Ran Cleanup and Activescan (log below).
Ran Hijackthis again (log below).

IE is no longer going to the wierd search engine. I will run Spybot again tomorrow to see if I still see the CoolWWWSearch etc.

Activescan Log:

Just a few random bad files and folders to clean up.

Please remove the following folders using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\i
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the configure button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Click on "Delete File on Reboot"
  • Navigate to this file - C:\WINDOWS\system32\sdkwl32.exe
  • Double click on that file.
  • HJT asks you if you want to reboot, now. Click "no".

Do that for the following files also, until you get to the last one, then click "yes" when HJT asks you to reboot.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdocvn.dll

Post back when you finish and tell me how your computer is running :tazz:

Okay. I have done as instructed. The WINDOWS/system32/i folder was not present but I have deleted the other files.

Other than that the computer seems to working if a little slower on start up - I guess that this is because I have so many different security at al stuff running now.

Am I clear now? Do I need to run and post another Hijack log or not?

I just ran Ad-Aware again and it found the CoolWWWSearch virus again. I removed it abd re-ran the scan again and this time it came up clean.
I also ran SpyBot and it turned up two new entrants - Smitfraud-C. and Adultstore. Again, I removed both.

Will the pain ever end??? :)

I just know that this is going to end with me having to reformat my hard drive and re-install everything from scratch. :tazz:

alot of those entries are certainly empty registry keys.

try cleaning up your registry a bit.
  • Please dowload: RegSeeker.
  • Click on "Clean The Registry" in the left panel.
  • Check all boxes (make sure the backup box in the lower left corner is selected!).
  • After it runs, click "Select All" on the bottom, then right-click on any selected item in the window and select "Delete Selected Items".
  • Click "Quit RegSeeker".
Now, open any of your installed programs, and make sure that everything opens ok. If so, reboot, then go back and run the RegSeeker again, do the same thing again if anything is found. When RegSeeker finds nothing else, then it's clean!

Okay, I ran regseeker 5 times (rebooting between iterations) and never got zero items - the last three times, I got 22 items, deleted them, rebooted, ran again and got 22 items again. Does this make sense???

I also ran Ad-Aware and SpyBot again and both came back clean.

Does this mean that I am good to go (please say yes!!!). :tazz:

Great job, it appears your computer is clean :tazz:

Ensure you rehide your “hidden files and folders” back to the way they were.

Now that your system is Malware Free, it is important to reset your system Restore. Click Here to learn how to.

I recommend that you Defrag your computer before setting your Restore points:

Go to start>all programs>accessories>system tools>Disk Defragmentor Make sure it set to the proper drive (default should be your main driver) and click on defragment

Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs, if you don't already have them, for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE
Spybot S&D
Microsoft Anti-Spyware

If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest one of these free programs:
*Note - do not use more than one anti-virus program as it will more than likely cause conflict.

AVG
Avast
AntiVir

The following free programs are great for prevention:

SpywareBlaster 3.4
Spywareguard
IE/Spyad

A Firewall is a must! Here are 3 good free versions:
(do not have more than one firewall running on your system)

Sygate
Kerio
ZoneLabs

There are other options other than Internet Explorer for a browser, which some say have better security. Two of them are:

Firefox
Opera

If you decide to keep Internet Explorer, This site is a great source for tightening up security on It's settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Included in those updates is Windows XP Service Pack 2. Click Here
Since you're junkware free, the time to get it is NOW. Service Pack 2 is a MAJOR upgrade for XP. It adds numerous security and software patches, as well as new features and functionality. You will also be adding another layer of protection against future threats.
Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided. Also read How I got Infected
