You don't really need to use a specific file recovery program if you use Windows XP. With system restore, you can restore your computer to a previous time, giving you back all files/folders/programs etc that you deleted previously.

System Restore is kinda picky about what it backs up although. If he had deleted something out of My Documents system restore isn't going to fix that.
Off hand I can't think of any GOOD file recovery software that is free. I've had excellent luck using R-Studio although. Scans the drive at the sector level for missing / deleted files.

Here is a free alternative that works pretty well
Free PC Inspector.

Some people swear by RECOVERMYFILES (google it), but I have not used it.

Thanks for the replies guys
System Restore won't work because it is a crashed hard drive that I just used for data storage. Recover My Files is what I'm using now, but you need to buy it. As for PC Inspector, I'll check that out.
