Hi,

PC: 1 GHz Pentium III, XP Pro, now at SP 2.

I got infected about a week ago via Explorer; it was SP1 without recent updates. It crippled Norton, which was up to date and running at the time.

I followed your SPyware steps. Ewido was the most effective, but I get repeating infections, about once a day, usually at startup in the morning, with hclean32.exe (Trojan.ghost.qr), ntfsnpla.exe (spyware msn.agent), and rdsndin.exe (Spyware.FindSpy). Ewido finds them, but can't find what is spawning them. Norton doesn't do much good at all.

++++++++++++++++
Here's a report from Ewido. I also attached a snapshot from the Ewido quarantine:

Hi David Turner and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

1. If you haven't logged in go to Geeks to Go and do so. Then proceed to item a.

If you already have logged in, go directly to item a.
  • Click on My Controls at the top right hand corner of the window.
  • In the left hand column, click "View Topics"
  • If you click on the title of your post, you will be taken there
2. Also, while at the My Controls page, check the box to the right of your post and then scroll down.
.Where it says "unsubscribe" click the pull-down menu and select "immediate email notification"

3. Please DELETE your current HJT program from its present location.

4. Download and run the following HijackThis autoinstall program from Here HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click SCAN and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')
  • POST the log into this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

Regards,

Trevuren

Hi Trevuran,

Thanks for getting back to me.

There is no box to check on 'My Controls' to the right of my post. I went to 'Email Settings' and chose 'immediate email notification.' Ok?

Please RIGHT-CLICK HERE to download Silent Runner's.
  • Save it to the desktop.
  • Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
  • You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done, let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once you receive the prompt All Done!, open the text file on the desktop, copy that entire log, and paste it here.
*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

1. Copy everything in the code box below (starting with REGEDIT4) and paste it into Notepad. Go up to "File > Save As", then click the drop-down box to change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as fixware.reg on your desktop.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"System"=-
"System"=""

2. Double-click fixware.reg and when asked if you want to merge with the registry click YES.

3. After the merged successfully prompt, please reboot your computer.

4. After reboot, please download RKFiles from HERE
  • Unzip RKfiles.zip to the desktop
  • Double-click RKFiles.bat to run it. It may take a while.
  • When it is finished a window should appear with a log.
5. Please copy the contents of the log and paste them here
  • Note: the log with be saved at c:\log.txt

Hi Trevuran,

First, thanks for your great help. I definitely will make a donation in gratitude.

A few questions: What did you find with HiJack and Silent Runners? How are they different from the Spyware scanners? What was hidden in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon? Is this usual, or was this a particularly clever piece of virus?

What does RKFiles do?

++++

What do you recommend for anti-virus: Norton, Ewido, or something else?

Here's the RKFiles log:

Some look for packed files, some look for files of certain lengths, all of course, in certain locations.

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.
  • Save it to your desktop.

  • Run Killbox.exe.

  • Select "Delete on Reboot".

  • Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them then press CTRL + C

    C:\Windows\System32\hclean32.exe
    C:\Windows\System32\ntfsnlpa.exe
    C:\Windows\System32\rdsmdin.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\service.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\gpsresl32.exe
    C:\Windows\System32\csttr.exe

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

  • Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt.
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

  • After reboot, post a new HiJackThis log here.

Make sure you are disconnected from the Internet and that all programs and windows are closed.

Run HiJackThis. Place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED: These are hijacks through Kiev.

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{63200121-0F3E-4D16-B4C5-FC8F3D323F7C}: NameServer = 195.95.218.18,85.255.112.11

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{EB62DF52-8623-478B-B0EB-F8F16A7712FB}: NameServer = 195.95.218.18,85.255.112.11

Close HiJackThis.

Now lets check some settings on your system.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel and double-click on Network Connections
  • Then right click on your Default Connection
    • Usually Local Area Connection for Cable and DSL
  • Left click on Properties.
  • Click the Networking tab.
  • Double-Click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item.
  • Select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS Servers Automatically.
  • Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
Make sure to reboot and post back a new HiJackThis log into this topic.

Before we continue with the cleanup of your system, I need to know a few things:

.Are the following programs, programs that you installed yourself and are you totally sure that they are safe?

SafeSex
FileBx
HandyAdressBook

To answer your question, YES they could have. Like any type of hijack of this nature, it is wise to change all passwords. This recommendation applies to safesurfing in general. All your sensitive data should be protected by randomnly generated passwords which you change monthly.
When changing these passwords, do not use this system until it is pronounced clear.

Trevuren

Yes, I installed these programs.

Safesex is a memo program with a suggestive name but it just takes notes. I've had it in for two years with no effect. It comes from http://www.nullsoft.com/free/safesex/. Nullsoft created Winamp.

Filebox is a path shortcut utility. Had it for 3 or 4 years. Bought from http://www.hyperionics.com/

HandyAdressBook I installed this summer. Bought from http://www.beiley.com/habook/.

Thanks, David

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
  • First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:
    • Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
    • Choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
    • Uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
    • Close the window with ok
  • Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = C:\WINDOWS\system32\search.html
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = C:\WINDOWS\system32\searchbar.html
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = C:\WINDOWS\system32\searchbar.html
    O1 - Hosts: localhost 127.0.0.1
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {08BEC6AA-49FC-4379-3587-4B21E286C19E} - (no file)

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  • Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

    • Restart the computer.
    • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
    • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
    • Press Enter.
  • Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if they are present):

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\search.html

  • Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

  • Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now.

There was no c:windowssystem32search.html. There was a c:\windows\system32\search.html, dated 2003, which I renamed.
