hello i have tried so many different things to fix my issue,to no avial, but anyways i have something called Win32 startpage trojan that keeps installing it self through different files it installs. the main one is a file called m.bin, it will install several copies of m.bin (meaning eventually i will delete m.bin(1) m.bin(2) ect....) if i let the file continue without running any sort of antivirus or trojan remover programs, eventually it will install a program called "search assistant" and search assistant changes my homepage to about: blank
i have read through many different threads in an attempt to fix my problem. i have run:
spybot s&d
no adware
lavasoft ad-ware
edwido
registry mechanic
i had nortons but after being unhappy after many attempts to fix other issues i finally installed "avast"
there are other programs i have used, but those are the main ones i have now
these programs do seem to correct any problems that i have (they find alot of bad files) but after a few days i will have a message from avast saying " a file was found trying to install win32 startpage 009 trojan
so i will attach my hijack this log i hope to hear from you all thanks for looking

Hi and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Sam and I will be helping you. :tazz:

You are currently using hijackthis from a temp directory. This can cause problems. Please create a directory on your c: drive called c:\hijackthis and download and unzip hijackthis into that directory. Run the program from that directory from now on. It is essential that you follow these steps or certain important features of the program will not function correctly.

Please download Seeker's SpSeHjfix here:
http://www.derbilk.de/SpSeHjfix112.zip
Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.co.../safemode.shtml

Once in Safe Mode, please run SpSeHjfix.bat. Click "Start Disinfection" and follow the prompts. Allow your computer to reboot when required. Post the logfile from the tool here for me when done.

Also post a new hijackthis log.

Your log looks pretty good.

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

hi sam
i went ahead and deleted those two lines in hjt
but ust like everyother time, after leaving the computer alone for a few hours
i would get a pop up message from avast saying that "m.bin is trying to install a version of win32 start page 090" the number at the end of the string changes, but anyways like i attempted to explain in my origional post if i let everything alone and dont run anysort of trojan or spyware programs i will eventually get "search assistant" installed into my program files and my hjt log will look like the one i posted.
any other ideas
thanks agian for your response

Let's take a look and see if there's anything else there that you should be concerned about.

Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
http://www.ewido.net...wnload/updates/

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
  • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.

Reboot your computer and post a new hijackthis log and the log from Ewido.

hi sam
after doing the ewido scan and a reboot nothing popped up right away, but after letting the computer sit for the day, when i got home from work, i would click on IE
and i would get a pop up message from avast saying i had a file m.bin containg a version of win32 startpage 070
then the other window came up with my options of wether to abort , or move to chest, these are the only avast details i can get:

location - http://66.98.144.29/m.bin
file name - Win32:StartPage-080 [Trj]
type - 0536-2, 09/07/2005

i have tried to contact avast about thisissue but i never recieved anything back
i also thought that i might have a program that is installing the m.bin file along wiht the win32 startpage, so i deleted alot of my freeware programs or programs that i had the backups to and reinstalled them (this was before ever talking to you), but that still didnt fix it,
i was thinking of maybe trying a different security program other than avast to see if the new program would give me the same warnings of the win32 start page trojan
so ill talk to you soon to see if you have any other ideas
thanks agian

Please download CWShredder but don't run it yet.

Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
* if you have trouble getting into Safe mode go here for more info.

Now run CWShredder, making sure to click "Fix".

Reboot back into normal mode.

Please download DLLCompare from here (unless you have downloaded it previously) http://downloads.sub.../DllCompare.exe

*Save it to your desktop and run it.
*Click 'Run Locate.com'to scan.
*When the scan has completed, click 'Compare'.
*When completed, click "Make a Log of What Was Found".
*Please Copy/Paste the entire contents of the logfile to this thread.

Note: If you get an error after pressing Run Locate.com:
copy autoexec.nt from c:\windows\repair\ folder to c:\windows\system32\ folder.

Let me know if CWShredder found anything.

Download KillBox and unzip it to your desktop.

Open Killbox and select the Delete on reboot option.
Copy and paste the following file to the field labeled "Full path of file to delete"

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\sqlohop.dll

Press the Delete button (the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it).
A first dialog box will ask if you want to delete the file on reboot, press the YES button.
A second dialog box will ask you if you want to REBOOT now. Press the YES button.

Your computer will reboot.

===========

Now let's take a look at another log.

Please RIGHT-CLICK HERE to download Silent Runner's.
  • Save it to the desktop.
  • Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
  • You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done, let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once you receive the prompt All Done!, open the text file on the desktop, copy that entire log, and paste it here.
*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

Let me know how things are working for you now.

Perform these steps once again for me.
