Hi, within the last week my machine appears to have been infected by the Aurora.ABI Network spyware/ad-ware. Despite my best efforts and growing frustration I've been unable to remove it.... in fact it doesn't appear I've done anything but make it angrier.

I'm running MS Windows XP Home Edition, Version 2002, SP 2.
I have the Windows Firewall turned on as well as Norton AntiVirus which is on for auto-updates and regular scans. It just ran last night and show no (zero) infections on my machine (which can't be accurate...)

Just this morning I installed the beta version of the Microsoft AntiSpyware tool and ran it. It located 18 suspect spyware/ad-ware/trojan items (3 of which referred to Aurora and/or ABI, ABetterInternet) on my machine all of which I checked to have it disable and remove, which it did. I restarted immediately however soon after launching a browser the Aurora pop-ups continued.

I'm new to this site and this is my first posting though I've just downloaded and run the HJT tool and am hoping someone can assist me in finally removing this annoying spyware once and for all.

Download the latest version of Ad-Aware from HERE (if you already have Ad-Aware installed, make sure that it is the latest version 1.0.6 and always go online and update it before you run it).

If it's NOT the version 1.0.6, can you then uninstall your current version/delete folder: C:\Program Files\Lavasoft & empty recycle bin. Finally install the latest version.

Download Lavasoft's VX2 Cleaner plug-in HERE

• Install the VX2 Cleaner
• Start Ad-Aware SE
• Go to "Plug-ins"
• Select the VX2 Cleaner plug-in and click "Run Tool" (Before running the VX2 Cleaner, make sure other anti-virus or anti-spyware applications are closed.)
• Click "OK" when asked if you want to execute this tool.
• If your computer isn't infected, click "Close".

If your computer is infected;

• Select "Clean"
• Reboot your system.
• Scan your computer with Ad-Aware:
  
  Set up the Configurations as follows:
  • Click the Gear wheel at the top of the Ad-Aware window
  • Click General > Safety & Settings: Check (Green) all three.
  • Click Tweak > Cleaning Engine > UNcheck "Always try to unload modules before deletion".
  3. Click on "Proceed"
  4. Click on "Scan Now"
  5. Deselect "Search for negligible risk entries" as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
  6. Select "Search for low-risk threats"
  7. Run the scanner using the Full Scan (Perform full system scan) mode.
  8. When the scan has completed, select Next.
  9. In the Scanning Results window, select the "Scan Summary" tab.
  10. Check the box next to every "target family" for removal.
  11. Click "Next", Click "OK".
  
  
• Reboot your computer again
• Run a second scan (With Ad-aware & VX2 Cleaner) to make sure the files have been removed from your computer

Post a fresh HiJackThis log once done.

Thanks for your assistance with this. I've followed your instructions and it appears it's done or doing the trick.... I can't entirely tell if everything is cleaned up though I haven't had any new pop-ups since restarting my machine (though it's only been a few minutes)..... crossing-my-fingers....

Not entirely clean.. Can you check & clean your system with the following if it finds anything:

Download cureit;
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe

Run drweb - cureit
Double-click the "drweb-cureit.exe" and click "ok" in the prompt window that will open, asking "start the express scan now".
It will first make a quick scan of your system, let it clean what it finds, and when it says "done" in the lower left corner click on all your drive's.
A red dot will mark the selected drive(s) . Then hit the pedestrian who now has turned green.
Click on the green man in the right corner, it will scan ALL your drive's, hit yes to all.

Reboot.

Post a fresh HiJackThis log once finished.

Next,

• Clean out temporary files:

• Click Start -> Run and type in: cleanmgr
• Click "Ok".
• Let it scan your system.
• Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only ones checked.
• Click "OK" to remove them.
• Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.

Then reboot and let me know how's the system running

Hi, just followed your follow on instructions.... and my system seem to be running perfectly fine. I've not seen anymore Aurora.ABetterInternet adds for a while and feel good knowing the past few things you've had me do have located, cleaned or deleted so many other Ad-ware and Trojan files....

I've posted a new HJT log below just for safe measure which I just created after rebooting.

I only have one other question I wanted to see what you thought about.... I have MSN Messenger (v.7.0) set up to automatically start/login at Start Up.... when it does this, there is an Ad that pops up:

asking if I'd be willing to take a Survey etc... etc....

I've only seen this ad upon start up of Messenger and typically just click the Red "X" to close it rather than answer Yes or No. It appears the ad originates from this company http://www.insightexpress.com and I presume it is likely just a Microsoft market survey about Messenger, though what do you think? Do you think I should just click "No" the next time it comes up and expect it should dissapear? After all the problems over the last week I'm hesitant even to click "No" on any ad for fear of opening the door to new ad's, spyware and trojans........ which would really suck after all the help you've provided to get my system squeeky clean!

I'm hoping this Ad is nothing to worry about though wanted to get your thoughts as you clearly know what you're doing....

Here's some tips for future to prevent spyware;

Detect and Remove Programs:

• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

Prevention Programs:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed. (My favourite)
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

Other necessary Programs:

• AntiVirus Program <= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kaspersky, this is a must have.
• Firewall <= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
• More Secure Browser <= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox.
• EULAlyzer by Javacool <= No need to read End user license agreements when installing software--
