 Hey Guys, found this site searching for help on how to get rid of these annoying program. I am completely unaware of how it got onto my computer. I have updates windows XP with sp2 and all updates and Norton’s internet security 2003 running.

What happened? Today I was surfing the net and got a "Dr Watsons Postmorten Debugger" Not responding error, I also noticed a dramatic change in my systems speed. This worried me so I got onto google and searched for removal tips and here I am now.

From all other posts I have read I noticed the use of hijackthis and posting the log, which I have downloaded and posted the log bellow.

All help is greatly appreciated :tazz:

P.S. ;) I don’t understand how this "Dr Watsons Postmortem Debugger" could have found its way onto my pc. I do regular system scans and keep up to date with windows patches.

Dr Watsons Postmorten Debugger is a legitimate Windows file. It's being triggered due to malware on your system.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinSys] C:\WINDOWS\System32\WinSys.exe <- Virus

The following are not necessarily spyware/malware, but we suggest you place a check mark next to the following entries, as these programs may be taking up system resources.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Cmaudio] RunDll32 cmicnfg.cpl,CMICtrlWnd
(Description: CMedia audio card system tray applet. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_05\bin\jusched.exe
(Description: Sun Java update scheduler. Checks for updates. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] \"C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe\" -atboottime
(Description: Apple's QuickTime loader. Completely unneccessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinampAgent] F:\Program Files\Winamp\winampa.exe
(Description: The WinAmp Agent. This puts a WinAmp icon is your system tray. It is completely unnecessary, and some viruses may hide in this file. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinampAgent] F:\Program Files\Winamp\winampa.exe
(Description: Loads the System Tray icon for the WinAmp media player. Can be used to mantain file associations so programs like QuickTime and RealPlayer don't take over as default player for various media types. Available via Start -> Programs. If you don't use WinAmp constantly, removing this entry will free up some system resources. )

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvMediaCenter] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\NvMcTray.dll,NvTaskbarInit
(Description: Nvidia system tray applet. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

Big resource hog:
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = F:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE
(Description: Microsoft Office startup assistant. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a significant amount of system resources.)

Please reboot into safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu).
Be sure you're able to view hidden files, and remove the following files in bold (if found):
C:\WINDOWS\System32\WinSys.exe

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working. :tazz:

It all went well I have had no more "Not responding errors" and speed wise it seems to be a bit faster and loading.

I was able to find the file in safe mode and delete it. I also saw a reinstall file for the winsys.exe so I deleted that, hopefully that was a right move.

Another question I have is when I press ctrl + alt + delete and my task manager comes up, when I go to processes I have about 40 processes running and I don’t know if this is a high number or not. If it is a high number is their a way of cutting the number of processes?

Thank you very much for your help admin :tazz: ;)
