Hi guys!

I started out having WinFixer2005 hijacking my IE browser. I followed your directions, and when I got to ewido, ewido said I had Spyware.VirtuMonde in C:\WINDOWS\msagent\intl\nutabr.dll. I allowed ewido to delete the file and continued through your instructions.

Nothing else showed up until Trojan Hunter when I received "Found possible trojan file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\nsosscfg.exe (Suspicious: UPX-packed file in Windows System folder.)" I deleted that file.

The only Windows Update I had was Genuine Advantage Validation Tool, which I updated.

I re-booted and ewido popped up with the same file (nutabr.dll) being a Spyware.VirtuMonde. I ran HJT at this time.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

1. Download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Create a folder on your desktop and name it VundoFix.
• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files to this folder.
• After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
• Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• Please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
  
  
  • C:\WINDOWS\msagent\intl\nutabr.dll
  
  
• Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
• The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
• In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

• Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

2. Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).

Set the program up as follows:

• Click "Options..."
• Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
• Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
• Click OK
• Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

3. Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

4. Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

ActiveScan keeps shutting down on me part-way through the scan! It did pop up with 2 Spyware detected, but since the scan didn't finish and it shut down my browser, I have no way to know WHAT the 2 Spyware are!!

• Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.
  
  
• Reboot Your System in Safe Mode
  
  How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode
  
  
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
  • Press Enter.
• Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if they are present):
  
  PowerReg Scheduler.exe<==You will have to do a Search for this one
  
  
• Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE
  
  
• Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now.

You may want to consider stopping all those Logitec programs from loading at startup. They consume a heck of a lot of resources.

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

2. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE

• Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
• Left click on "System Restore Tab"
• Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
• Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE

• Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
• Click on "Apply"

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

To protect yourself further:

• Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
