one of my svchost.exe processes (the one with the User Name: LOCAL SERVICE) constantly uses up about 40%+ of the CPU in almost an hour after my computer starts up. as soon as i end the process, it comes back but takes up 0% CPU and the problem is solved until about another hour later when it starts using up a lot of cpu again. any ideas on what's causing this / how to solve it?

what i've done so far:

using lavasoft ad-aware and spybot S&D i've search for spyware and the problem hasn't been solved.

using processexplorer (procexp) i've had a look at the services using that svchost (which are: Alerter, LmHosts, Remote Registry, WebClient) and stopped all of them and changed their startup to 'manual' but as soon as i get rid of all of them my pc seems to get affected as it constantly makes that working sound and the svchost.exe keep ending and starting (using about 1-2% of cpu).

any help would be appreciated

Welcome to Geekstogo!

Maybe this article from Microsoft can answer your questions about the svchost.exe process.

http://support.micro...om/?kbid=314056

EDIT: Also try this article: http://www.neuber.co...vchost.exe.html

sorry but i dont see how those links would help :tazz:

edit: i noticed that when i end the process, all the services linked with that svchost.exe apart from 'Remote Registry' disappear, so i've changed those services' startup modes to 'manual' and everything seems to be solved so far, i'll post back if the problem persists :)

Look carefully at the articles. They explain why the process could take up such a large ammount of resources and also explain what the spoolsv.exe process is about.

thanks, but i read the http://support.micro...om/?kbid=314056 and couldn't see anything related to the cpu usage of svchost.exe

i also read what people said here: http://www.neuber.co...vchost.exe.html and it seems like those people have one of the viruses linked with svchost.exe since it uses up 100% cpu and their one doesn't have the username: local service, however the maximum mine uses is about 40/50% of the cpu

Even so, it might still be a good idea to follow the recommendations here. :tazz:

I looked at your log. Everything seems to be in order. It's not a virus that's causing this.

great thanks, at least that's another culprit out of the way, do you have any ideas on what it could be?

edit: nevermind, i've fixed it, i realised that i had to disable all the services that were using the svchost.exe (local service) not just set them to manual startup
