I have done most of what has been suggested here for removing malware, but I seem to have created another problem along the way. Here are the two issues that I need help fixing:

1) From the Hijackthis log I can tell there are other items that need to be cleaned (www.jetsearch.com)

2) The other problem I have seems unusual. After running the tools and rebooting, WindowsXP comes up with only my wallpaper. No icons, no taskbar etc. Just the walpaper and cursor. I am able to start applicatins via the Windows Task Manager (ctl-alt-del) where I select File->New Task (Run) and then browse for the appliaction I want.

Here is a quick snaphot of my environment, the sequence of events and my HiJackThis log. Any and all help is appreciated.

Windows XP Home edition with all current loads avail from MS,
two year old IBM NetVista with some variety of AMD chip, and
DSL via SBCYahoo. Their modified verison of IE is my default and it has its own home page hard coded so the www.jetsearch.com that shows in the log is only a problem if I ever start IE natively.
Use AOL for e-mail and access web that way some as well as via the SBCYahoo browser.

Wed - Started getting massive popups with advertising.
- shut down and unplugged till the weekend to work on it.
Fri - Ran spybot multiple times and deleted discovered items each time.
- Many items seemed to reappear each time I ran the tool.
Sat - Ran Spybot again and then also ran the free version of AVG.
- AVG took about an hour and found 50 items mostly trojan horses
- 'Wiped' all identified items via the AVG tool.
- Rebooted and then got the Wallpaper only condition
- Discovered I could get to applications via 'Task Mgr' and ran AVG
- 2nd running of AVG turned up 47 items, and wiped them.
Sun - Found this website and saw I had done most of suggested tasks
- Ran the cleanup program listed as I had not done that before.
- Rebooted and still have wallpaper only.

I am posting my most recent HiJackThis log and will post any other documentation needed. I have a hiJackthis log from before I did anything if that is helpful. I am hoping this will be sufficient to get my windows back in tip top shape. Here is the log:

Hi and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Sam and I will be helping you. :tazz:

You have a badly infected computer. This will take a few steps to get you completely cleaned up.

First, Download LSPFix.exe to a convenient location. Do NOT run this program. This is only to be used if you lose Internet Access after removing NewDotNet.

To Get rid of NewDotNet, go to:

Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following:

New.Net Applications or New.Net Domains (anything that says New.Net)

If it is not there, go here and follow Procedure 4: NewDotNet Removal Procedure 4.

In the event that you lose Internet access after removing New.Net, please double-click LSPFix.exe that you downloaded earlier. You will see 2 panels. If there is any file listed in the "Remove" panel on the right-side, leave it as is and just click "Finish>>" then reboot your computer and you should now have access to the Internet. If nothing is listed under the "Remove Panel", do NOT do anything - just close the program. You will need to use another computer to come back here for further instructions on what to do.

Reboot and post a new hijackthis log.

Buckeye_Sam,

Thanks for helping out. I hope you can get me to a healthy state again.

I de-installed the NewNet Application. I wasn't able to do it as you stated. I don't see a taskbar on my desktop. I managed to navigate through the file structure via the Windows task manager (ctl+alt+del) file-> new task which opens a window where I can find folders and files. I found a NewNet folder and there was a deinstall application. It looked like the one your link pointed to i Procedure 4 so I ran that. It de-installed the program. I ran the Clean-up program, rebooted and then ran Hijackthis. Its log is below.

Couple of other data points. I continue to have advertisement pop-ups during the day but nothing out of control like before. When my problems started last week, I was getting massive floods of popups and I noticed seeing Aurora in the title of some of the popups. I saw referece to Aurora in some of the malware postings. I didn't mentioned that in the original post but it might be related to these other problems. Another thing that appeared around that time was an icon for '180Assist' down in the lower right of the task bar. I don't know what you call those icons that appear there, but I view them as started tasks where the firewall Icon and the printer icon show up plus other things. I deleted the 180Assist file and it occasionally would come back after I deleted it.

I can't see that area now since it was part of the taskbar and I don't see that at all right now. Nor do I have any icons on the desk top. My sole interface to the system is all through the Windows Task Manager. I haven't had any problem with the applications I have tried to run once I find the file that starts the application.

This is very strange, and I hope you can get me to a better place. Here is the log:

Ok, we're going to take a big step and see how much we can get rid with this step. Follow these instructions as well as you can. If there is anything that gives you problems, just make a note of it and proceed with the rest.

First we need to download and prepare some tools that we will need to fix your problem.
  • Please download Ewido Security Suite
    • Install ewido security suite
    • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
      • Install background guard
      • Install scan via context menu
    • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
    • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
      • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
      • Then click on Start Update.
    • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
    • Exit ewido. DO NOT scan yet.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
    Ewido Manual Updates

  • Please download Adaware SE 1.06
Install Adaware and check for updates, but don't run it yet.

  • Please download CleanUp 4.0
Install CleanUp, but don't run it yet.

==============

Now that you have the right tools we can start fixing your problem.

Please make sure that you can View Hidden Files

Please print out these instructions as the rest of this fix must be done in Safe mode and you won't be able to access the Internet.

Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
* if you have trouble getting into Safe mode go here for more info.

=============

Once in Safe mode, follow these steps:
  • Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

  • Run CleanUp 4.0. This will remove all of your temp files.

  • Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove everything that it finds.

  • Run Ewido:
    • Click on scanner
    • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
    • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
    • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
    • Save the report to your desktop.
    • Close Ewido.

  • Reboot back into normal mode.

  • Please run this online virus scan - Panda Virus Scan
    • Make sure it is set to clean automatically.
    • There may be files that this scan will not remove. Please save that information to include in your next post.

  • Reboot your computer and post the following information in your next reply:
    • A new Hijackthis log
    • The Ewido log
    • The log from Panda online virus scan
Let me know how things are running and what problems you are still having.

Great news - I can now see my task bar and icons from the desktop!!!!! We are making progress. I think there are a few things yet to go.

Some observations:

The folders to be deleted - some could not be seen while in safe mode so there were deleted later when I booted in normal mode.

Similarly with the hijackthis scan in save mode. Some of the corrections you showed weren't there. When I rebooted in normal mode, I reviewd and took action against those I didn't see the first time.

As a result of this, the scans posted aren't done in the order you suggested. I don't know if it makes a difference. Here is the order of things I have done.

Summary of my work:

Safe mode
Hijack this scan and work done - noticed not all folders there
Cleanup - 1,414 items deleted
Ad-Aware: 38 items quarentined
Ewido Scan: posted below
Reboot normal mode
Panda Scan - 9 items not fixed - posted below
Hijack this scan: notice some of the entries that were missing from safe mode and fixed them.
Looked for folders that were missing and found and deleted them
Reboot
Hijackthis scan: posted below.

Here are the posts.

One other observation - When I reboot, I get a message box titled '16 Bit Windows Susbsystem' where is says that windows/system32/autoexec.nt can't be started. then there are buttons to either cancel or ingore. Next round I will capture the exact wording. I first noticed this when all the popup attacks started last week.

You did a great job! Your log looks much better! :tazz:

Go to C:\Windows\Repair and look for autoexec.nt Copy that file and paste it into C:\Windows\System32

Next, delete these files that Panda identified.

I have made the changes. I have attached a file that looks suspicious due to the time frame it was created. Many of the files I have deleted in the process have a similar time stamp.

ventura-hot_246765 ( I attempted to attach it for you to examine)
mc-110-12-0000079 (in properties, this was shown - http://www.autoitscr...3/compiled.html
GSM3-0511 (no info here unless you want it.)

I do have one other problem that predates the infection here. I have been unable to sych my palm with this computer for some time. You seem to be very knowledgeable and was curious if you might have some ideas on this.

This is almost certainly just a software problem. Uninstall and reinstall the software that you use to sync them together.

Your log looks clean to me! :tazz:

Here are some optional fixes you can make with Hijackthis. They are not malware. These are programs that run automatically at startup. They are not necessary to be run at every startup and hog your computer's resources. Fixing these will improve boot up time and performance.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

    or

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.

      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
