Don't think you have this, but let's just try it. From one state employee to another. :tazz:

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune....oads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads....org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

One question: Do I close the C:\ prompt window now or not?

Thanks!

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log, and we'll clean up what's left. :tazz:

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Oh, man... I'm gettin' a little scared. :tazz: I'm glad I have someone to hold my hand and walk me through this......

I did what you said, but when the system rebooted I got a C:\ prompt window that said:

Killing explorer and Rundll.exe
The system cannot find the path specified.
0 file(s) copied.

And over that popped up a box that said:

Registry Editor

Cannot export backregs\69F4C16D-9B7C-4BC4-ABDD-5DFA455076C3.reg: Error opening the file. There may be a disk or file system error.

[OK]

So I clicked on OK (I didn't know what else to do) but the same box kept popping up so finally I clicked on it and then very quickly clicked on the [X] at the top of the C:\ window and then had to ctrl-alt-del to reboot because, you know, I had no icons or taskbar or anything.

After I rebooted I came straight here and that's all I know.

What's next, boss?

It belongs to a school district (I'm actually a curriculum consultant but I'm teaching some classes for a while... long story) but I can do pretty much anything I need to do to it. The only things that might cause a delay are (1) I don't have all of the software at my fingertips, but I could get it, and (2) I don't have 100% admin rights, but I'm pretty sure I could get that too.

It's on a LAN with a T1 line (I think... could be a T3 but I'm pretty sure it's not) but I can disconnnect that at any time if necessary. I can also get internet access without logging on to the network if I need to do that.

Anything else you need to know?

I don't know if that would cause troubles or not. Could. I have someone else looking at it. Did you try running it again?

Metallica gave me a piece of advice and he's the smartest guy I know.

Try Ewido in safe mode.

Then try the fix I gave you previously.

Here are the instructions for Ewido.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Looks good to me, but more importantly, how is it running?

Well... so far a cautious "ok". Let me reboot just to be sure because my system isn't functioning 100% correctly but it's just little stuff that happens sometimes, like my taskbar being a little weird looking. On the good side, not a single popup so far. You may just be on track to becoming my hero forever. :tazz:

Wow... I think it may actually be fixed!! I hardly know how to act! Thank you SO much!! (I'm sure you hear that a lot, and it seems like not nearly enough to say. I'll definitely be sending some money, but even that seems like not enough at this point.)

I know you've already gone above and beyond, and I know this forum topic is really specifically for getting rid of malware, which you seem to have done (woohoo!! :tazz: ), but would it be ok for me to ask you a few related questions? I've downloaded a bunch of programs and changed a bunch of settings in the process of working on this and now I don't know what to do... what's *safe* to do... with all of it.

Either way, I really can't tell you how much I appreciate your help. God bless you. And I mean that in the most serious, literal way possible. :)

Cool... thanks! No problem on doing it later; I totally understand.

1. I've downloaded tons of anti-spyware stuff... Microsoft, AdAware, Spybot, SpySubtract, ewido, TrojanHunter, etc. Should I keep all of it or get rid of some? I mean, is there any point to having all of it? And if I get rid of some, do you have any recommendations about what to keep and what to drop?

2. Because of all the problems I've had, I have my IE security settings sky high. As I'm sure you can imagine, that makes every tiny thing a big deal to navigate, so I'd love to be able to lower them, but I'm scared to do it because I don't know what's safe and what's not. Do you have any advice?

3. I keep getting a message saying that the System Configuration Utility is currently in Selective Startup Mode (which I already knew) and urging me to reset it to Normal Startup Mode. That's all well and good, but I want to make sure that everything that's set to open at startup is ok. The things on that list are igfxtray (checked but dimmed), hkcmd (checked), NWTRAY (checked), vptray (checked), npdor (checked), msmsgs (not checked), qttask (not checked), and SpySubtract (not checked). I can give you more info about each one if you want, but I don't want to overwhelm you any more than I already am, so I'm hoping that's enough. I know what npdor, qttask, and SpySubtract are and I know what to do with them, but I don't know about the others.

4. There is still one problem with my system and I don't know whether it's related to the malware or not, but I'll ask just in case. For some time now I haven't been able to highlight anything in IE. I assumed it was part of all the other stuff, and I even saw a couple of places on this forum where people were told that that problem was related to malware, but now I don't know. Everything else seems fine but I still can't highlight. Any ideas?

6. Unfortunately, I have another computer (personal, not work) that's infected. I didn't want to start working on it until I found out for sure whether I'd get real help here (GTG). Since I did, I'm going to start on it next. My question is this: Should I just post another reply to this same topic or should I start a new one?

I know this is a lot to ask. I certainly understand if you can't help with all of it. Thank you for everything.
