I was getting popups for Winfixer and WinAntiSpyware upon trying close Internet Explorer until my last restart. I have run every remover I can find and I thought the problem might be fixed on this last restart.

However, another problem appeared at the same time that the popups began to show up--my computer spontaneously wakes up if Hibernated or in Stand By mode. I had assumed that whatever is causing the popups is also generating some event that brings the computer out of those sleep-type modes.

Can someone run an eye over the HijackThis log and see if anything looks amiss?

You have the dreaded Vundo infection; not always easy to get rid of. Let’s see how we get on.

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files.
• After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
• Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• Please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
  • C:\WINDOWS\Drivers\expc.dll
• Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
• The fix will run then HijackThis will open.

I actually was on the right track! I'm very pleased with that. I already had vundofix ready to go and I'd tried to run it on my own but I couldn't find the culprits in the HijackThis log. I am so glad you ran an eye over it and saw where the problems could be. Thanks again.

Below I'll post the results of the two logs. A few notes here quickly before that. I also ran HijackThis again after I rebooted the computer in normal mode, and I did not see a return of the suspect entries in the HijackThis log. I then opened IE and visited a few random pages, then closed it. No popups still, which is good. I ran HijackThis again and looked at the results and I still didn't see any of the vundo stuff reappearing.

I have just put my computer in Stand By mode and waited about three or four minutes, and it did not spontaneously awaken. It had been doing this in under two minutes before, so I am tentatively thinking that part might be taken care of as well.

Now, without yet further ado, I present my logs.

I can post the post-restart log (normal mode) too if you want to see it, but I didn't see any lines referring to the expc.dll or anything downloading that offending .cab file in it.

I'm glad you posted a HJT log from normal mode. You can't read them in safe mode as very little loads, and they are therefore worthless.

Anyway it looks as though it worked, but there is still a little more to do.

Please use your system's search programme and find this name:cpxe

Your search result should show that name a few times, in the same folder, but with different suffixes.

Please delete all of them but please tell me what they were and where they were.

And then another HJT log please.

Odd, but the file search didn't turn up anything with 'cpxe' in the filename. I also searched for hidden files and folders and turned on every search option I could find.

However, things seem to be running much more normally now.

Very odd! I was expecting 3 files with the file extensions, cpxe.ini, cpxe.bak, and cpxe.tmp.

Not finding them unnerves me, especially where Vundo is, so as a precaution, could I ask you to run this please?

Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"

Don't use it yet!

Restart in Safe Mode

From the WinPFind folder-> Doubleclick WinPFind.exe and Click "Start Scan"

It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!

One you see "Scan Complete"-> a log (WinPFind.txt) will be automatically generated in the WinPFind folder.

Restart normally and post the contents of WinPFind.txt

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

*Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
*In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

Congratulations! your new log is clean. Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
MOST IMPORTANT: You should update Windows and Internet Explorer to get all the latest Security Patches to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the internet.

I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep your Windows, antispyware and antivirus updated.
