I deleted my Dellnet program a while back by way of the add/remove feature since I no longer needed it but the Desktop icon somehow got damaged and now I can't delete it.
I can't drag and drop it into the recycle bin....... and when I try to right click it and delete it I get this. (photo of message attached)

I can't load the disk or program anymore since it's long gone in order to remove it once again to see if that helps.

This is on my 98SE computer........not XP.

Under properties for it......it says the "Service profile is damaged. Re-Install the service profile"
I don't have the program to do a re-install.
Seems like the uninstall didn't work correctly.

What are my options?
Do you need a HJT log?

Three things you may be able to do. One is keep it from loading during startup the other is to delete in the desktop folder or in ms-dos.

You need to go to Folder Options>View and enable view all files and filename extensions, then go to Windows\Desktop to find the file.

Thanks for responding!

It's not listed under C:\WINDOWS\Desktop when I enabled view all files and filename extensions.

How should I try it under MS DOS?
Rebooting in Safe Mode?

Download this file, extract it, and run the killbox.exe file. When it loads type the full path to the file you would like to delete in the field and press the Delete File button (looks like a red circle with a white X). If it prompts you to reboot, allow it to do so, and hopefully your file will now be deleted.

If you don't know the path to the Dellnet file, do a search for it by going to Start, Find, and typing in Dellnet. The path that you enter in Killbox should look similar to this: c:\windows\desktop\Dellnet

Thanks.....but I can't use Killbox since no file name exists as far as I could tell.

Killbox is for any file that is stubborn and won't delete. But since it is usually malware files that won't delete easily, you often hear Killbox being used to get rid of them.

There has to be a way other then reformatting the entire hard drive.

I have an idea that may get rid of it, unless it's too late. Did you reformat your computer?

I know you said you couldn't move it to the recycle bin, but can you move it anywhere else? If you can put it in, for example, your 'my documents' folder and reboot you may then be able to delete it.
Alternatively you could try downloading Easycleaner2.0 from http://personal.inet...rts/ecleane.htm and see if that helps. Make sure you read the instructions thoroughly first, and i would recommend you never use the 'delete duplicate files' option as it could land you in a whole world of pain. I use the other options regularly and it does help. Good luck.

No, I can not move it to another location.

MoveOnBoot did not work either since there is no path I can direct it to or drag and drop it.

3. Right-click on the Dellnet file and choose "Erase"


I have a feeling that Eraser will complain and give you an error. Post back with exactly what the error says. If it succeeds, then great! If it fails, your hard drive may be slightly damaged, but I have to see what the error says.

Thanks but that didn't work either. The Erase option does not appear when I right click on it. When I right click on the icon it only gives these four options:

Connect (Microsoft Connection Mgr - Service Profile Damaged. Please re-install the service profile.)

Delete (Microsoft Connection Mgr - Service Profile Damaged. Please re-install the service profile.)

Properties (Look at my very first post for what this reads.)

Create Shortcut (This is the only thing that works but creating a shortcut is useless. I can delete the shortcut since it works like any icon.)


There is no file...there is no location for it.
What I have is a frozen damaged icon on my desktop with no path/file/location etc at all. It does not exist since I un-installed the program months ago.
