Hello, after running AVG & ADAWARE, and other scanners I have removed viruses & spyware (mainly STARTPAGE.21)

If I brouse to EXPLORER.EXE and RUN I get the message EXPLORER.EXE CANNOT BE FOUND.

Now I have no desktop in nornal or safe mode.

I can restore the viruses back from my AVG vault, then all works in SAFE MODE, but not in normal.

URGENT help required, many thanks.

Hello, can you reboot and post a new hijackthislog please? Normally after reboot, you'll have your explorer and IE back. :tazz:

It seems like you were also in the middle of an install of windows media player?

Hello,

It seems like you are having your explorer back. :tazz:

Let's fix those runonce-keys now, because it seems like they are leftovers, because you already rebooted and they are still there.
Any reason why you ran smitrem?

Open notepad and copy and paste next bold in it:
(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce]

Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
This is how the regfix must look afterwards: Posted Image
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.

I suggest you reinstall Windows Media player because it seems like the install failed in a way.

Another question.. Did you turn off your AVG? If not, I also suggest you reinstall it.

Hi, if the other account is dealing with smitfraud, I need a hijackthislog from the other account as well.

Did you already run smitrem? You have to run it on the account that is dealing with smitfraud. If so, please also post the log smitfiles.txt which is present on your C:\

Hello, it seems like you ran FixO on the wrong account before. :tazz: You had to use it on this account. :)

Anyway, FixO already deleted the bad files, so just some leftovers here..

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SMSSU] C:\WINDOWS\System32\SMSSU.EXE
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Tmntsrv32] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Tmntsrv32.EXE
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Win32res] C:\WINDOWS\win32res.exe
O9 - Extra button: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {332EE3A9-7130-46E0-9719-DC7A5332A809} - (no file) (HKCU)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {332EE3A9-7130-46E0-9719-DC7A5332A809} - (no file) (HKCU)

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

How is your desktop looking now? Can you already change it?

Ok; let's take a look and restore it...
Odd that smitrem didn't restore it.

Open notepad and copy and paste next bold in it:

regedit /e look.txt "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies"
start notepad look.txt

Save this as look.bat , choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
This is how the batch must look afterwards: Posted Image
Doubleclick look.bat
Notepad will open with some txt in it. Copy and paste the contents in your next reply.

Edit.. you really need to perform this on the account with the tabs missing -problem

Hello,

I don't know which account is which, so create and use it for both accounts then... :tazz:

Open notepad and copy and paste next bold in it:
(don't forget to copy and paste Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00)

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoActiveDesktopChanges"=-

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"WallpaperStyle"=-
"NoDispBackgroundPage"=-
"NoDispAppearancePage"=-
"Wallpaper"=-

Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
This is how the regfix must look afterwards: Posted Image
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.

Let me know afterwards if the tabs are back and you could change the background. :)

That's magic, all working fine, except that I cannot open 'phone & modem properties' in the control panel. I get PHONE & MODEM CONTROL PANEL CANNOT BE OPENED. YOU MAY HAVE A PROBLEM STARTING TELEPHONY SERVICE.

I am on the internet to you with another computer. Sorry to be a pest.

Ok; I can't follow anymore now...

So this is again another computer you are dealing with this problem? Or is it the same computer?

Already tried to update your drivers or reinstall the modem?

Rightclick My computer
Choose properties
Click the hardware tab
Choose device manager
select your modem
Rightclick it and select update driver.

This is more a hardware related problem here, so if that doesn't work, I suggest you start a new thread in the hardwarpart/connections of this forum, because I don't have many knowledge about these issues and I'm sure someone else can help you better with this than I can. :tazz:
