peer to peer networking dosnt work

im connecting me laptop to my desktop using a crossover cable the cable is pluged in but it says cable is unpluged on both computers the network cards are:
Desktop-windows 98-Belkin F5D5000, desktop network pci card
Laptop-windows xp pro-Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI fast ethernet NIC

Try uninstalling the cards and reinstalling them through device manager. Run the network setup wizard on each computer.
