:tazz: Hello: I seemed to be infected with the PSGuard virus.

Symptoms:
Slow performance, no sound
Can't toggle IE window to the foreground
Black PSGuard desktop/removal of display properties

I have run:
CleanUp, AdAware SE, CWShredder, SpyBot S&D, Ewido, Trend Housecall & Trojan Hunter to no avail. I ran HiJackthis and compared to my previous Windows\system32 issue back in January 2005. I tried to fix the items, which seemd to work. During reboot system seemed faster and the sound worked. After reboot, the Windows\system32 folder showed up again and their was no sound.
Here is my latest Hijack log...

Hello: I have rerun all the clean apps to try to solve the Windows\system32 issue. I did try to repair the only files I saw that said "missing" (adsgone app) and the one audio file that said "L:Eng".
I also tried the app from a similar topic that stops the Windows\system32 window from opening. I am getting better performance, but want to make sure my system is clean. Note: now I get audio upon windows starting instead of at shutdown. But, the audio stops once all the apps load.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items, then click FIX CHECKED:

Close HiJackThis.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with a new HijackThis log.

Did you install ClickYes yourself?

CLEAN! :tazz:

NOTE: I still get momentary audio during the reboot, but once the apps start to load, then it goes quite. I do notice that Norton Internet security is popping up a lot asking if it is ok to allow programs to access outside servers. Is this because I have cleaned out the old files and it has to recheck them??

Thanks again for your time...

The NIS prompts might be because of the cleaning you did, yes.
New versions would have to be authorized again.

Check the logs if anything you don't recognize (or recognize as bad) has access.

You do have a lot opf programs running, but your HijackThis log looks clean.

Could the sound be produced by one of the programs that starts?
There are som many that I'm unfamiliar with, that it's hard for me to tell.

Pieter: Thank you for the reply. I will try to reinstall the audio driver and see if that fixes the issue. Is there any more I can do to work my way through my apps and see what the failuar is??

Their might be.

We would have to find out what the sound file was.
Windows keeps track of the most recently used files.

If you would perform the action below as soon as possible after rebooting we might be able to find out which soundfile it was and subesequently which program it belongs to.

Click Start > Run > copy this command:
regedit.exe /e C:\MRUlist.txt "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ComDlg32\OpenSaveMRU\*"
then click OK

This will create the file C:\MRUlist.txt
Post the content of that file.

Pieter: Here is the mRUlog...

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ComDlg32\OpenSaveMRU\*]
"a"="C:\\Documents and Settings\\Chris Castillo\\My Documents\\Temp\\Malware apps\\CWShredder.zip"
"MRUList"="ba"
"b"="C:\\Documents and Settings\\Chris Castillo\\My Documents\\Temp\\Malware apps\\mrulist.txt"

Let me know what other info you need.

Thanks!

Hmmm. Not very helpful.

Copy the code below into notepad and save it as lookup.bat
Set Filetype to "All files"
dir C:\Program Files\*.wmv /a h /s > files.txt
start notepad files.txt

Start the file by doubleclicking lookup.bat
That will open a file called files.txt. Post the content of that file.
