Sorry, Michelle - it didn't do anything. I zipped all of the iconcache.db files I could find (since I couldn't find her username for some reason) and it still shows up unknown.

If I right click on My Computer and go to properties, then to Change Icon, a window pops up that says, "Windows cannot find the file: c:\Documents and Settings\user\My Documents\My Pictures\King_xp.ico

Is it possible that the icon got deleted?

If they were deleted, it wasn't by anything we've done here. I'm not sure why it would be pointing to this location: c:\Documents and Settings\user\My Documents\My Pictures
This is the incorrect location for the system icons.

Right-click on the desktop and go to Properties. Click the Desktop tab, click the customize desktop button, under the general tab click "My Computer" and click Restore Default button. Does that get it back?

BINGO! That did the trick! I was googling for that icon name and it seems to be something she probably downloaded - definately not a Windows System icon. It seems like everything is back to normal.

I will download that antivirus software and install it.

Should I get rid of anything that was downloaded or created during this cleanup procedure? I figure the old logs can go, but I don't want to get rid of anything that could be useful in the future. I just don't want her asking, "Why are all these programs on my desktop? What's this do...?" Know what I mean?

Thanks so much for your help Michelle and Andy! When I told her I could straighten out her computer, I had no idea it was this bad. I figured I'd run Adaware and Spybot and everything would be fine. I'll have to try to explain to her that she can't just go around clicking on everything that pops up.

Thanks again!

Excellent! :tazz:

To answer your question, when we're done you can uninstall/delete everything we have had you download/make with the exception of the Anti-Virus program you're about to download :)

We need to do one more check:

Please update SpySweeper.

Then boot into Safe Mode.

I need a Startuplist log from Safe Mode again please:

*Open HijackThis.
*Click on "Open Misc Tools Section"
*Make sure that both boxes beside "Generate StartupList Log" are checked:

List all minor sections(Full)

and

List Empty Sections(Complete)

Click "Generate StartupList Log".
Click "Yes" at the prompt

It will produce a NotePad Page. Save it to your desktop.

While in Safe Mode, Run SpySweeper.

Reboot into normal Mode and post the startuplist log and the SpySweeper log, please.

Also, in a post after that (because it probably won't fit into the same post) I need a new HiJackThis log (from normal mode).

There are some other prevention programs that I will suggest you download for her when we're done (almost there!)

Actually, that is an excellent SpySweeper log. It saves all of the logs in the same place, so you posted the log from yesterday and today. The only thing it found today was one tracking cookie and deleted everything that was quarantined yesterday :tazz:

Copy everything inside the code box below and paste it into Notepad. Go up to "File > Save As" then click the drop-down box to change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as fixme.reg on your desktop.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer\Run]
"utxthuaeaf.exe"=-
"khrgvjtdrr.exe"=-
Double-click fixme.reg and when asked if you want to merge with the registry click YES.

Then run HiJackThis. Place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NAV Agent] C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\navapw32.exe

Close HiJackThis.

Because of one of the rootkits she had, I need a screenshot of some things in Device Manager:

Right-Click on the My Computer Icon
Select properties
Open the Hardware tab
Select Device Manager
Click on View
Select Show Hidden Devices
Navigate Down the list and expand Non-Plug and Play Devices
Maximize that Widow so that all of the entries under Non-Plug and Play Devices are visible, then post a screenshot here for me please.

You can take a screen shot by holding CTRL and press the prt scr button. Then go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Paint. In Paint, go up to "Edit > Paste", go up to "File > Save As", then change the "Save As Type" to "JPEG" and save it to the desktop. In your next post after clicking "Add Reply" click the browse button and navigate to the screenshot on your desktop and click "add this attachment".

The list wouldn't fit on one screen, so I have 3 screenshots.

Guess what? We're done! :)

You can now delete/uninstall anything we had you make or download.

Congratulations your log is clean! Great job on the clean up :tazz:

I recommend checking the http://www.microsoft.com website periodically for critical updates to install.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar. It's excellent stopping pop up windows.
