Hi,

I've been getting truly annoying web popups generated from the MagicControl.Agent. I've followed every instruction I could find on the web, used Spybot Search & Destroy, Lavasoft's AdAware SE Personal, the REGEDIT4 [-HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-343818398-1935655697-839522115-1004\Software\LanConfig] registry entry, and I can only get rid of the stinker when I start windows in secure mode. Once I restart XP the regular way, it's back. SS&D finds it and lets me remove it, but it comes right back.

SS&D finds the following registry entry:
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-205171372-2209972032-150050309-1006\Software\LanConfig

this holds a (standard) ASCII entry with no value, and an entry named LAN with value UP.

I've spent a good 10 hours now trying to clean my system. I am writing my dissertation at the moment and will need the computer to make a presentation for my thesis defense. If I can't get rid of that MagicControl.Agent, I'll have to install XP again, and that would throw me behind a lot. I would be very, very grateful if anyone of you can help me. It is a huge support that you are spending your time to help people like me. It is hard to believe, with the damage that this kind of malware creates, that there is not more action taken against these criminals distributing such code. Maybe once people in the legislature start having the same problems we'll see the end of this.

Thanks a million for your help!

I am including two longer posts, the first one is the Hijack This log, the second one the log created with the Silentrunners script. They are separated with the line

Here comes the Hijack This log:

Welcome to GTG.

I can't see anything suspicious here.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Please download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/.

1. Install Ewido Security Suite.
2. When installing, under 'Additional Options' uncheck:
* Install background guard
* Install scan via context menu
3. Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double click it.
4. The program will now open to the main screen.
5. When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning 'Database could not be found!'. Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
6. You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
* On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
* Then click on Start Update.
7. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. The status bar at the bottom will display 'Update successful'.
8. Exit Ewido. DO NOT scan yet.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can go to http://www.ewido.net...wnload/updates/ to update manually.

Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Don't run it yet.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.

CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Run CleanUp! and click on the Options button. Uncheck 'Scan local drives for temporary files'. Also uncheck those two Newsgroup entries if you don't want to delete them. Click OK and then click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run. After it's done, choose Yes to logoff.

Now open Ewido and do a scan on your system.

* Click on scanner
* Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* NOTE: During some scans with Ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
o You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
o If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
o Do NOT select 'Perform action on all infections'
o If you are unsure of any entry found, select none for now as the action.
* Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
* Click Save report.
* Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.

Restart your computer. Post the log for Ewido.

Hi greyknight17,

thank you very much for your response. I followed your instructions, Ewido finds two items which unfortunately reappear.

I did the following:

- booted in safe mode

- cleaned system

- ran Ewido Scan, found 2 items. I ignored them first to get information on these, so I rebooted, went on the web, and once I found out about them,

- rebooted in safe mode, did fast Ewido Scan, removed the two previously found ones

- rebooted in safe mode, did fast Ewido scan, all clear.

- Rebooted in regular mode, Spybot says System Startup global entry - Value deleted. Entry: msjgkedt. When I don't allow change, Spybot resident opens a new window every second and says Prohibited changes to registry data base. Resident didn't allow change of msjgkedt based on my prohibit-list. While Spybot resident windows are merrily appearing (and Spybot is running) I still get web popups.

- Still get web popups after Spybot is turned off

- back in safe mode, I cleaned temp files again with CleanUp. Then ran Ewido and cleaned found items, a second Ewido scan remained clean. I ran Spybot S&D, the MagicControl.Agent was still there with two entries. I let S&D remove them. I ran Lavasoft Ad-Aware, it just found 28 negligible items which I removed anyway. All these steps were done in safe mode.

When I reboot in regular mode and open IE windows, I still get popups.

The first Ewido log, saved after I had carrieded your instructions, looks like this:

---------------------------------------------------------
ewido security suite - Scan Report
---------------------------------------------------------

+ Erstellt am:  10:28:56, 12.09.2005
+ Report-Checksumme: 8E0C7815

+ Scanergebnis:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\msclock32.dll -> Dialer.Generic : Ignoriert
C:\WINDOWS\system32\msplock32.dll -> Dialer.Generic : Ignoriert

::Report Ende

after the next scan & removal with Ewido, the log remains empty, no items are found.

Then, after working with the pc in regular mode and opening IE and returning to safe mode for another Ewido scan, the malware items are back.

What do you say, can we send these suckers, MagicControl.Agent, msclock32.dll, msplock32.dll, msjgkedt, to perdition?

Thank you very much for your help!

That msjgkedt entry is most likely bad. If you see Value Deleted in Spybot TeaTimer, then just allow that change because some program probably removed it.

I don't see any signs of the infection that I think you have there...since they are not in your log, but let's try this and see if it can clear this problem:

Download Brute Force Uninstaller.
Unzip it to it’s own folder (c:\BFU)

RIGHT-CLICK HERE and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download EGDACCESS Remover. Save it in the folder you made earlier (c:\BFU)

Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe

In the scriptline to execute copy and paste c:\bfu\EGDACCESS.bfu
Press execute and let it do it’s job.

Wait for the complete script execution box to popup and press OK.
Press exit to terminate the BFU program.

Now try running your several scans again and see if those two still return after a restart or two. If they still come back, do this:

Right click on http://www.silentrun...ent Runners.vbs and choose Save As...Save it to your Desktop. Make sure you have disabled any programs that may block/disable scripts (ex: Ad-Watch, TeaTimer, Norton, etc.). Double click on 'Silent Runners' to run it. This will take a few minutes. It will create a file called 'Startup Programs' followed by your computer name and current date. Open up that file and post all the contents here in your next post.

Also give me a new HijackThis log afterwards.

Hi,

I ran the BFU script and the Silentrunner logger. The msclock/msplock don't appear in the Ewido log anymore, eexcellent, but now it finds a bunch of dialers. One of the MagicControl.Agents is still there, the one with the \mc entry is gone.

Spybot S&D still finds a registry entry related to the MagicControl.Agent:

HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-205171372-2209972032-150050309-1006\Software\LanConfig    Registry database key

Ewido now finds the following 37 dialers:

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to Start->Run and type in regedit and hit OK. Go to File->Export and save the registry somewhere as a backup. While in the Registry Editor, navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and delete msjgkedt

If any of the above registry keys are giving you problems deleting, right click on them and click on Permissions. Then click on the Advanced button. Make sure the first box (Inherit from parent...) is checked. Click OK and OK. Then try deleting the entry again. Once you're done, close the Registry Editor.

Download KillBox http://www.greyknigh...spy/KillBox.exe. Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. Copy the below files and go back to KillBox. Go to File->Paste from Clipboard and then hit the button with a red circle and white X. Confirm to delete and when asked if you want to reboot, say Yes:

c:\windows\system32\msjgkedt.exe

If you get a message about PendingOperations, just restart manually then.

After the restart, I want you to run BOTH of these scans:

Run an online virus scan at TrendMicro http://uk.trendmicro...call_launch.php. Just follow the instructions on the site to run the free online scan. If any viruses/trojans are detected, try to delete or clean them in that site. If any are not cleanable, copy and paste the infected files here. You may also use Panda ActiveScan at http://www.pandasoft...ucts/activescan. Post the log from the Panda scan here.

Then boot into Safe Mode and run the Ewido scan. Save the log.

Restart and post the HijackThis log, Ewido log and the Panda log.

Hi,

The msjgkedt was gone when I started. I looked at the place you specified and edit->searched the entire registry.

I therefore went to do the online virus scan at TrendMicro, it didn't find anything.

Panda found two entries, one looks interesting indeed:

Incident                      Status                        Location

Dialer:dialer.b              No disinfected                C:\WINDOWS\tmlpcert2005
Virus:Trj/Mitglieder.DQ      Disinfected                  Inbox Archiv\Inbox 2005\Vffnen\new.zip[f5434.exe]

This tmlpcert2005 reads as follows:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\SystemCertificates\TrustedPublisher\Certificates\BD8400524261DF1ADBD8860F22C9CE2B97471448]
"Blob"=hex:04[...lots of hex code here which I cut out...]
  05,74,b6,4e,f0,bd,77,48,47,13,a8,42,ec,fb,c2,e5,0b,53,d6,bc,e8,81,67,9b,0b,\
  a0,83,5f,32,0e,d1,3e,a5,ce,40,21,1a,95,73,82,5e,f6,30,10,ca

In my registry, I have two entries at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\SystemCertificates\TrustedPublisher\Certificates: one is

\62119EF862C6B3A0D853419B87EB3E2F6C78640A

the other one the one found by Panda shown above,

\BD8400524261DF1ADBD8860F22C9CE2B97471448

Both have a field by the name "Blob" which contains the word "electronic group" amongst others.

Anyway. I then rebooted in safe mode to do the ewido scan, and the msclock32.dll was back, together with 3 cookies. Here is the log:

---------------------------------------------------------
ewido security suite - Scan Report
---------------------------------------------------------

+ Erstellt am:  13:48:42, 14.09.2005
+ Report-Checksumme: 2D64838C

+ Scanergebnis:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\msclock32.dll -> Dialer.Generic : Gesäubert ohne Backup
C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\Holger\Cookies\holger@2o7[1].txt -> Spyware.Cookie.2o7 : Gesäubert mit Backup
C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\Holger\Cookies\holger@questionmarket[2].txt -> Spyware.Cookie.Questionmarket : Gesäubert mit Backup
C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\Holger\Cookies\[email protected][1].txt -> Spyware.Cookie.Adserver : Gesäubert mit Backup

::Report Ende

Once I rebooted in regular mode, Spybot did the msjgkedt-spiel again, but neither in the registry nor the System32-directory did I find any msjgkedt entries/files, also after I had stopped the popping Spybot windows.

And here is the HijackThis log:

OK, uninstall Spybot now. Restart your computer and boot into safe mode again.

Run Ewido and save the log.

Restart and run Panda scan again. Save the log and post it here along with the Ewido log. Reinstall Spybot and check for updates. Restart and run a Spybot scan. Anything now?

Hi,

here's the Ewido log, ran in safe mode after I had deleted SS&D:

+ Erstellt am:  10:50:18, 15.09.2005
+ Report-Checksumme: E4A04B8B

+ Scanergebnis:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\msclock32.dll -> Dialer.Generic : Gesäubert ohne Backup

Panda finds:

Incident                      Status                        Location

Dialer:dialer.b              No disinfected                C:\WINDOWS\tmlpcert2005

And Spybot, after reinstallation and updating, finds MagicControl.Agent again,

MagicControl.Agent: User setup (Registry key)
  HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-205171372-2209972032-150050309-1006\Software\LanConfig

The casino, naked gals, and spyware-remover IE popups still show up, unchanged.

Go to Start->Run and type in regedit and hit OK. Go to File->Export and save the registry somewhere as a backup. Close the Registry Editor now. Go to Start->Run and type in notepad and hit OK. Then copy and paste the following into Notepad:

REGEDIT4
[-HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-205171372-2209972032-150050309-1006\Software\LanConfig]

Save the file as "delete.reg". Make sure to save it with the quotes. Double click on it and choose Yes to merge it. You may delete the file afterwards.

C:\WINDOWS\tmlpcert2005

Boot into Safe Mode and run a scans using Ad-aware and Spybot. See if they find anything.

Restart and go back to Normal Mode to run another Ad-aware and Spybot scan. Also run Panda scan again. Still found?

Hi,

One down. The \tmlpcert2005 file is gone thanks to your Killbox application. Worked like a charm. Thanks for that!

The MagicController is still there. I followed all instructions in the given order, the registry is updated, but the web popups are still there, Spybot S&D still finds the MagicControl.Agent in the same Software/LanConfig entry, and Panda finds adware called navipromo (no further info in the Panda log) which I assume is the same as the MagicControl.Agent. I can only keep it off the system for longer than one Spybot scan if XP is in safe mode.

Is there a way to modify the windows\system32\config\software file some way and change whatever says lanconfig in there? I have files software (27 392KB), software.sav (592KB) and software.LOG (88KB) in that folder.

Does the reappearance have anything to do with XP's restore folder?

Which file/library/whatever is actually responsible for putting the MagicControlAgent back on my machine?

If I can't delete the LanConfig registry item (is it used by any useful part of my system, or only by the adware?) can I change the access rights to it or modify it in another way so the system cannot view or change it?

I was going to ask you to use System Restore but there are no indications that it's being restored from your restore points. I guess we can give it a try and see what happens but before we do that, I want you to run another scan...

We don't know...if we know what file is doing that, we can get rid of this problem.

Please empty any Quarantine folder in your antivirus program and purge all recovery items in the Spybot program (if you use it) before running this tool.

Download the Mwav virus checker at http://www.mwti.net/antivirus/mwav.asp (Use Link 3)

1. Save it to a folder.
2. Reboot into Safe Mode.
3. Double click the Mwav.exe file. This is a stand alone tool and NOT just a virus checker......so it won't install anything.
4. Select all local drives, scan all files, (uncheck the part to check/scan the registry) and press SCAN. When it is completed, anything found will be displayed in the lower pane.
5. In the Virus Log Information Pane......
Left click and highlight all the information in the Lower pane --- Use &CTRL C &on your keyboard to copy everything found in the lower pane and save it to a notepad file
*Note* If prompted that a virus was found and you need to purchase the product to remove the malware, just close out the prompt and let it continue scanning. We are not going to use this to remove anything...but to ID the bad files.

Once you copy that to a Notepad file...highlight the text and copy it here.

Eexcellent, that did it! Good riddance to bad rubbish. No more MagicControl, no more popups. Thank you big time!

That's what I call a thorough scan, MicroWorld Anti Virus was working for a good 8 hours. It also indicated at least one false positive, a text file containing part-of-speech tags. But hey, I certainly won't complain.

I deleted the quarantine section of SS&D, but didn't find a similar item in my Norton Anti Virus. MWAV then found three entries in Norton's quarantine directory, I erased those. MWAV found a total of 99 items, mostly in restore points.

- Should I do anything about those restore items? Can I simply delete them?

- It also says Object "cws.therealsearch Spyware/Adware" found in File System! Should I do anything about that?

Msjgkedt, msclock32, and msplock were back, I just deleted them and then removed the LanConfig item in the registry while still in safe mode.

It is great to be able to work again without the popups, also to finally be able to work again full force without the machine slowed down by the scans. You da man. Thank you very much for your expert help. I made a donation via your Amazon account.

Cheers and thank you very much for your help!

We got it. Just wanted that confirmation from MWAV. Since it's in your restore points, then we will clear out the system restore entries:

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer and uncheck the same box to enable System Restore.

See if msclock and the others still return after a restart. If not,

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.
