Hello. First let me say that I am not sure whether this post should be in the Internet Forum or the Operating Systems Forum. About a month ago Norton Antivirus detected w32.desktophijack but was unable to fix. I followed Geeks to Go Guide and recently succeeded in removing the w32.desktophijack virus (or at least the message box ceased to appear). :) Spybot S&D still detects 43 smitfraud entries that it is unable to fix. :) Despite the Spybot results the computer was running okay. On Sunday my wife turned on the computer and encountered a black screen saying saying that she had 28 seconds to choose what she wanted the computer to do. No matter what she clicked the computer restarts itself. The black screen does allow you to start in safe mode. The attached HJT log was generated in safe mode. Please Help. I am in completely over my head ever since we switched to DSL. :tazz: Perhaps I should also mention that I was plagued with MSSvc error messages which I discovered were part of a stealthdisk program which I did not install. I had previously disabled the services but restarted them prior to running HJT. I would like to get our system running to the point where I can download SP2 as well as install some of the software Geeks to Go suggested in the guide. Anyway, I babbling now. Here is my HJT generated in Safew Mode. Thank you in advance for any assistance.

Hi Anxiety Reaction
Welcome to Geeks to go

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Download about:buster by RubbeRDuckY Here.
Update About:Buster
  • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
  • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
  • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
  • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
  • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update" then click the X to close that window.
  • Now close About:Buster
Boot into safe mode

Please run about:buster by RubbeRDuckY:
  • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
  • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
  • It will begin to check your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
  • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I may need a copy of it later.
  • Reboot your computer into safe mode again
Run about:buster again following the same instructions as above, this time without the restart at the end

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = about:blank
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = about:blank
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RegSvr32] C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
O21 - SSODL: SystemCheck2 - {54645654-2225-4455-44A1-9F4543D34545} - (no file)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Reboot into safe mode.

Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):
Use windows search facility if you have trouble finding these files.

ALCXMNTR.EXE

Now open EWIDO:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin. Please ensure no other windows are open for the duration of the scan.
  • You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
  • Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.
Close ewido security suite.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log along with the Ewido log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working. :)

After that, Reboot.

Andy,

Thank you for the prompt assistance. As I am only able to boot in safe mode I cannot update the About:Buster. Should I run it as is?

Good Morning Andy,

Sorry that I was unable to post yesterday. I left the downloaded files at work this weekend. I worked through the fixes yesterday and I am still having trouble. about:buster did not find any alternative data streams. EWIDO did not find any infections. I should note that our HP has 2 user profiles in addition to the admin profile created in safe mode. I first carried out the fixes on my profile (John) and then on Lynn and Admin. After running HJT on my profile and noticing that the R1 -HKLM\software\Microsoft\InternetExplore\Main,Default_Search_URL=
http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com was missing, I ran one while logged in as Lynn and found them in her HJT log and fixed them. There are still some slight variations with the logs so I have posted copies of all three HJT logfiles (Admin, John, Lynn).

With regards to deleting ALCXMNTR.exe...When I ran a search for this file the following files were found:

ALCXMNTR C:\Windows
Alcxmntr C:\hp\drivers\audio\Realtek
ALCXMNTR.EXE

After deleting the ALCXMNTR.EXE file the following file appeared while searching and was created as a desktop shortcut icon

ALCXMNTR C:\Windows\system 32\Reinstallbackup\0009\driverFiles

I am still unable to do anything other than in safe mode. When windows attempts to start it flashes to an blue HP screen and then to a black screen with the following message:
"We apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this."

There are a couple of other paragraphs and then it gives you the following choices to start windows:

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with C prompt
Last known good configuration
Start Windows Normally

The choices other than safe mode restarts computer and loops you again to this message screen.

Thank you again for your assistance. Please let me know if you have any questions or need additional details. As the EWIDO scan was negative I am also attaching a copy of the Startup file should that be helpful.

Hi Anxiety Reaction

Please follow the instuctions below.

Go to Start > Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the below services:

(DataService )

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, under the General tab click the Stop button, then click the drop-down box to change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok.

Open HiJackThis, click on "None of the above, just start the program". Now, click on the "Config" button (bottom right), then click on "Misc Tools", then click on "Delete an NT Service" a window will pop up. Enter the below item into that field (make sure there are NO spaces before or after the name):

DataService

Click OK.

It should pull up information about the service, then ask if you want to reboot. Click YES.

Repeat the above instuctions but replace “(DataService)” with “(DataStorage)”.

Reboot when asked.

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Post a new HiJackThis log after it reboots.

Hello Andy,

The computer is still not allowing me to boot in anything but safe mode. While searching the systems forum I found a good description of what I am experiencing. " The Windows XP splash screen appears and then what appears to be a blue box flashes and then the computer reboots." It then gives me the black screen that I have described previously. Here is the new HJT log as well as the uninstall_list.txt

Thanks again for your assistance.

Hi Anxiety Reaction

Have you got any other user accounts on the PC? If not, try to create a new user account and reboot.

Your log appears to be clean, if this does not work please post back and I will put your problem to the trusted techs :)

Andy :tazz:

PS do you have a link to the thread you saw?

Andy,

Here is the shortcut to the discussion thread:
http://www.geekstogo...lly-t63179.html

I do have two other user accounts on the computer as referenced before (Lynn and Administrator) HJT logs for those were posted with my 9/12/05 reply. Other than the "DataService" and "DataStorage" fixes these logs are the same now as on 9/12/05. I did download Service pack 2 before the system was free from infections. Didn't know at the time possible consequences. Could that be causing my problems? Also when I run spybot while logged into my user acount it still detects 43 smitfraud.c items that it can not fix. Is that a problem?

Hi Anxiety Reaction

Sorry should've gone back though your post's. :)

I don't belive smitfraud is causing your problem, but it will not do any harm to run the removal tool. Please follow the instuctions below.
I know you already have some of the tools downloaded, but please run through all of the fix in order. (you do not have to redownload the tools you already have) :)

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items, then click FIX CHECKED:
===================================================
HijackThis entries here if needed. Delete any other malware files not associated to the smitfraud variants and SpySherriff.
===================================================

Close HiJackThis.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Andy -

I am still unable to work in anything other than safemode so I am unable to link to the Panda Active Scan. Should I carry out the smitfraud.c fix without the Panda Active Scan? By the way, Spybot S&D only finds smitfraud.c entried in my user account. Backweb lite was found by Spybot in the other accounts and fixed. EWIDO as well as Spybot has never detected smitfraud.c or the w32.desktophijack that Norton Antivirus detected.

I forgot to print out how to uncheck the automatically restart on errors and then reboot as normal within the startup and recover section. I will do so tonight and post tomorrow.

I should also note that prior to the startup problems I am now experiencing, windows was attempting to install some unknown item that was prevented by Norton Antivirus. The message suggested uninstalling Norton. I was a little hesitant to do so in fear of greater infection. So rather than uninstalling Norton I stopped the installer (Or so I believe...because it stopped trying to install upon startup) and it was after this that the current problems emerged.

Hi Anxiety Reaction

Can you remember the name of the program that was trying to install on your system?

Run the smitfraud tool as far as you can and post the results back here.

Good Evening Andy,

It never gave a name. I did notice that the computer had been set for automatic updates from windows scheduled to run on Sunday at 3am. It was the following Monday that we started to have problems.

Hello Again Andy,

Perhaps having access to too much information is counterproductive but I was playing around with the imnotageek website and found a reference to Explorer.EXE. It says that it should be in a systems file which under HJT Running processes shows it as C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE (additionally, the spelling appears to be off from other valid entries). Just a thought . Sorry if I'm making things worse.

Hi Anxiety Reaction

I assume you are refering to the explorer.exe in your log, the one shown at the top of your log in the running processes is the valid file.

When you have posted the smitfraud results we will take it from there :)
