Hello,
Please :)
This is on my boyfriend's computer running Firefox connected to the Internet via cable. Normally things are okay, albeit a bit slow (the computer is aging ;-)).
Today, I accidentally started to open Windows Explorer and pop-ups appeared until I got the window closed. Now that I'm in Firefox there are no pop-ups but everytime I run ad-aware something different seems to appear...

That said, I've run AdAware SE, CleanUp, SpyBot Search & Destroy, CWShredder, and AVG... :tazz:

Here is what his HijackThis log looks like:

Hello and welcome to Geeks to Go:tazz:

I see you have been infected by malware. Lets get you fixed up.
Please follow the directions as closely as you can . Lets begin

Download and install CleanUp! Here
but do not run it yet.
*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {8050081C-B4A7-A820-FE79-C8C9DEC13D9D} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\OBOT.DLL (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {CA010CCF-E720-AEA2-7451-CA098216209A} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\FVTAXN.DLL
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Zkes] C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\ZKES.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Dqh5] C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\DQH5.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AutoUpdater] "c:\Program Files\AutoUpdate\AutoUpdate.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [stcinstaller] c:\installer\id53.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [98D0CE0C16B1] rundll32.exe D0CE0C16B1,D0CE0C16B1
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Mbwbnfgq] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ipv.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Mrpt] C:\Program Files\amse\tard.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\RunServices: [Mbwbnfgq] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ipv.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\RunServices: [Mrpt] C:\Program Files\amse\tard.exe
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://ka.bar.need2f...earch.html?p=KA

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.
Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):

AutoUpdate
amse

[

color=blue]Please note any other programs that you dont recognize in that list in your next response[/color]

Please delete these folders using Windows Explorer(if present):

C:\Program Files\amse
c:\Program Files\AutoUpdate
c:\installer

Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ipv.exe

Now run cleanup

After that, Reboot.

Please run this online virus scan:
Panda Active Scan You need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
  • Once you get to the Panda site, scroll down a bit and click on Scan your PC
  • A new window will appear; click on Check Now!
  • A new window will appear; fill in the boxes (Country, State, email addy)
  • Click on Scan Now! >
If you have never used ActiveScan before, you will be prompted to install an ActiveX control (asinst.cab) : click on Install. Panda will install the component, and then install the latest signature files.
  • From "Select a device to scan...", choose "My Computer"
  • Allow the scan to run. It'll take a while.
  • When complete, click on "See Report", and then on "Save report"; save it to a convenient location.
  • I will need you to post that report in your next reply; simply open the text file, then copy/paste the content here. Also post a new Hijack log

Thanks :)

Hi Loophole,

I ran HijackThis, removed the folders and files as instructed, ran CleanUp, and rebooted; However no windows/programs will open, preventing me from proceeding to the next step of running Panda. (so I'm sending this from my computer)

**Strange things in Add/Remove Programs:
WINDOWS 98 Q823559 UPDATE (security patch I guess I hadn't noticed before)
OIN (ick)
MICROTEK SCANWIZARD FOR WINDOWS 95 V2.46 (why?)

Also when I did reboot into safe mode, I didn't even try to open anything and got an error message that Explorer had performed and illegal operation and would be shut down. Then when rebooting into regular mode, I got the STIMON illegal operation box.

Thanks for your help,
Rainfairy

Oin can be uninstalled

Nothing we did should have affected you in this way. Let me check on that error , What is the exact error message ?

Okie Dokie,
So I rebooted in safe mode to remove OIN, and got the reply that it had been removed already, so I just took it off the program list.

Now I'm waiting for the computer to reboot in normal mode again. This is what seems to take forever..... Okay, it finally came up with no stimon error, and I'm able to open windows.

So I'll run Panda and hopefully return fairly soon!

:tazz: Thanks again.

EDIT**Since we're normally using Firefox, you want me to specifically do this in Explorer, correct?

Got it. Also: I had closed AVG in Firefox, but forgot to close it when I opened Explorer, so I got an error message installing activex at first because AVG was scanning. Now that I stopped it, Panda seems to be working just fine.

Please uninstall all of the following if they are present

NavExcel
FlashTalk
Lycos
Need2Find

Click here to download Pocket Killbox by Option^Explicit

Please be careful with the next set of instructions

Now open pocketkillbox Select the option "Delete on reboot".
Now highlight and 'copy' (Ctrl + C) the entire list of filepaths below :
Click 'File' on the killbox menu at the top and choose 'Paste from clipboard'
The entire list should now be in the "Full Path of File to Delete"
field. To check, click on the dropdown-arrow next to that field.
If you expand it, these lines should all be there

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\mobupd.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\stlb2.xml
C:\WINDOWS\DOWNLOADED PROGRAM FILES\webdlg32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\INF\BIINI.INF
C:\WINDOWS\smdat32m.sys
C:\PROGRAM FILES\NavExcel
C:\PROGRAM FILES\FlashTalk
C:\PROGRAM FILES\Lycos
C:\PROGRAM FILES\Need2Find
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\P2P Networking
C:\WINDOWS\bsx32
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\lefjrr.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\winbpupd.exe

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\D0CE0C16B1.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\INF\BIINI.INF
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\webdlg32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\webdlg32.inf

Then press the red button with a white X in it.
Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be deleted on next reboot, click YES.When it asks if you would like to Reboot now, click YES.

Post a new hijack log and tell me how your system is running now.
