as like many people i have read here this win fixer and other win .. products that get advertized seems to be a popular problem, I have run all the softwares that have been suggested but the problem persists.

I have Internet security by norton as well, doesnt seem to help.

please help!!!!

This is a Dell machine so has an Administrator, I have admin privledges, and my gf is a "user" on the machine there for 3 log in options.

Please download VundoFix.zip to your desktop.

Double-click VundoFix.zip and extract it to your C:\ directory.
Copy the instructions below and paste them into Notepad for reference.
- All other windows need to be closed while doing this fix!
Navigate to the new folder C:\VundoFix
Double click on KillVundo.bat
- When it starts running it will tell you that you need an active internet connection then ask you to press any key once you do.
Please press any key to continue.
Wait for HiJackThis to open.
When HiJackThis opens, click Do a system scan only. Place a check next to the following items, if found:

Once they all have a check next to them, click the FIX CHECKED button, then close HiJackThis.

You will once again be prompted to press any key. Upon doing so this time you will receive a "Blue Screen Of Death". Don't worry, this is normal! Let the computer reboot. If it doesn't boot straight to windows, manually turn the computer off and then back on.

Once the computer is rebooted post a new HiJackThis log as well as the contents of vundofix.txt which can be found in this folder: C:\VundoFix

Vundofix didnt do anything like you said it would, it opened and said:

which I did and all it said was:

Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.

HiJackThis didnt coem up or anythign so i just ran it manually, checked all of what you said and all were there.

I'm sorry about that. There was a major update recently and I missed the new info.

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
You will first be presented with a warning and a list of forums to seek help at.
it should look like this

Please seek assistance at one of the following forums:

After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

Empty Recycle Bins
Delete Cookies
Delete Prefetch files
Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

tried active scan x2, just as it finished it shows 1 virus 1 virus disinfected, 3 spyware 0 disinfected and then the desptop goes blank and shuts down all windows and operations.

This infection is becoming very difficult to remove.
That fix didn't work, so we need to try another method.

Print out the following instructions as you will not have Internet Access for the rest of this fix.

Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Unzip Process Explorer and double click on procexp.exe
- In the top section of the Process Exlporer screen double-click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.
- Once you see this screen click on each instance of bakcab.dll once and then click the kill button.
- After you have killed all of the bakcab.dll's under winlogon click OK.
- If you see any .ini or ,bak files with either the same name or the file name in reverse, kill them as well
- Next double-click on explorer.exe, select the Threads tab, and again click once on each instance of bakcab.dll then click the kill button.
- If you see any .ini or ,bak files with either the same name or the file name in reverse, kill them as well
- Once you have done that click OK again.
Run HijackThis and place a check beside each of the following.

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {827DC836-DD9F-4A68-A602-5812EB50A834} - C:\WINDOWS\msagent\CHARS\bakcab.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: bakcab - C:\WINDOWS\msagent\CHARS\bakcab.dll

Now click Fix Checked and close HijackThis.
Now double-click on the vundo.reg file that you saved on your desktop earlier and allow it to merge with the registry.
Double click on Killbox.exe and then check the delete on reboot button.
- Enter the following filepath and filename into the Full path of file to delete box
  
  C:\WINDOWS\msagent\CHARS\bakcab.dll
- Click the red circle with the white x and say yes to the delete prompt but no to reboot now
- Repeat with any of the reverse named .bak or .ini files
- After you have input the last file name then reboot

After your computer has rebooted please run Hijackthis again and post a new HijackThis log.

There was nothing in the winlongon.exe thread tab
there was 4-5 under the explorer.exe

its still in teh sytem though as i just had a popup as i was opening this log.

Let's run through the new fix one more time.

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
You will first be presented with a warning and a list of forums to seek help at.

again activescan was in process at 99% done, windows explore refreshed itsself, closed all applications so i can not give you a copy of that scan, ran ewido it found 251 things so took care of that, it said it cleaned the c:\windows\msagent\chars\bakcab.dll file though still getting popup, retried all processgiven in safemode and every time i run hijackthis, thoses same 2 files come back every time.

I checked in with an expert. Norton may be interferring with Vundo fix running in safe mode.

Please review your settings in Norton to disable ScriptBlocking. I don't use Norton so I'm not sure exactly where you'll find it.

If you can't find it follow these steps once you are in Safe mode.

Click Start -> Run
Type in services.msc and hit enter.
Scroll down and find ScriptBlocking Service
Double click on it to bring up Properties.
Click Stop.

Once you have disabled Script Blocking go ahead and proceed with the same fix that I posted last time.
