Norton, I believe, is actually complicating this process. But let's try something here that was suggested to me by one of my colleagues.


First run CleanUp that you have already downloaded.


Next open up Killbox by double-clicking on KillBox.exe to launch the program.

• Highlight the lines below and press the Ctrl key and the C key at the same time to copy them to the clipboard:
  • 
    C:\WINDOWS\MSAGENT\CHARS\bakcab.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\MSAGENT\CHARS\bakcab.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\MSAGENT\CHARS\bakcab.bak
    C:\WINDOWS\MSAGENT\CHARS\backab.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\MSAGENT\CHARS\backab.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\MSAGENT\CHARS\backab.bak
    
    
• Now go to the Killbox application and click on the File menu and then the Paste from Clipboard menu item. In the Full Path of File to Delete box you should see the first file. If you dropdown that box you should see the rest of them. Make sure that they are all there.
• Click on the Delete on Reboot option and then click on the red circle with a white 'X' in to to delete the files. Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be deleted on next reboot, click YES. When it asks if you would like to Reboot now, click YES. If you get a "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message then just restart manually.

Your system will reboot now.

Did you find a setting within Norton to disable Script Blocking service? That is most likely what is preventing VundoFix from working.

Now let's make sure that Script Blocking service is stopped.
Click Start -> Run and type in services.msc and hit enter.

Scroll down to ScriptBlocking Service and double click it.
Click Stop and then set Startup Type to disabled.


Reboot and post a new hijackthis log once you have done this. I want to see if it restarts itself on reboot. Also let me know of the existence of those files I listed.

i have shut off norton as far as i can tell


everytime i run ewido it finds that file and says its cleaning it, but thats evrytime i run it.

active scan i still have not been able to run fully and do not know why.

gets to almost teh end, and my windows desktop flashes and all programs runnign shut down.

• Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

• Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

• Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

• Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

• Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
