I have managed to clean almost everything off my computer except for a line from the HJT log which will not let me delete it:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\winxp\system32\blank.htm
This appears to be the culprit behind a white page that appears on my desktop and will not let me see the wallpaper (IE local page?).
Obviously I am missing something, whatever keeps restoring the blank page.
Any help will be appreciated!

Sorry for delay. Here in Brazil I get online only once every couple of days. The problem is on my notebook, not here at the moment, so I can't post the complete log. Is complete log an option I need to check on HJT? Does that include th start up log? I will get back to you tomorrow with a follow up. please bear with me.

Okay, here is my HJT log, followed by my startup log. Aside from the aforementioned HJT entry which refuses to delete, there is another file which will not be deleted; it generates a folder called !SUBMIT in C: when I try:
C:\\WINDOWS\temp\JET69B2.tmp
Very annoying.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\winxp\system32\blank.htm
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winupdate.reg] winupdate.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [winupdate.reg] winupdate.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [winupdate.reg] winupdate.exe

The following are not necessarily spyware/malware, but we suggest you place a check mark next to the following entries, as these programs may be taking up system resources.

O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Gamma Loader.exe.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Calibration\Adobe Gamma Loader.exe
(Description: Adjusts monitor colours across all programs, including Photoshop. It is needed by some graphics professionals who want their monitor calibrated. Most home users will not need it, and thus should remove this entry. )

O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Gamma Loader.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Calibration\Adobe Gamma Loader.exe
(Description: Adjusts monitor colours across all programs, including Photoshop. It is needed by some graphics professionals who want their monitor calibrated. Most home users will not need it, and thus should remove this entry. )

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE
(Description: Microsoft Office Startup Assistant. This program loads some Microsoft Office components into memory, even if you're not currently using MS Office. Removing this unnecessary program will free up a considerable amount of system resources. )

Please reboot into safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu).
Be sure you're able to view hidden files, and remove the following files in bold (if found):
C:\WINDOWS\System32\winupdate.exe

Please delete your temporary files. Double Click My Computer (WinXP: Navigate to Start --->My Computer)
You will see an icon representing your harddrive (most likely C: Drive) Right Click on the hard drive icon and click Properties at the
bottom of the fly out window. One the very first tab (General) you will see a button labeled "Disk Cleanup"...click that button.
Make sure the following are checked:
Downloaded Program Files
Temporary Internet Files and
Recycle Bin

Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working. :tazz:

Thanks for you help. I followed the instructions, but I am not clean yet. Everything I checked in HJT did not return except for the evil line:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\winxp\system32\blank.htm
Still refuses to go.
None of the stubborn .tmp files appeared in safe mode but they came back once I rebooted.
I did not find C:\WINDOWS\system32\winupdate.exe but there is one file there by the name of winupdt. Should I delete that one?

Try this more advanced procedure for the complete removal of Windupdates:

I tried the winupdate removal instructions but I did not find any of the mentioned keys, processes or files on my system. I deleted winupdt, but my desktop remains blocked by this thing, the "local page." Whatever I have does not seem to be affecting IE otherwise; it does not reset my homepage, like it seems to do for everyone else. Any more ideas?

Clever, WinXP the normal path for Windows. Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\winxp\system32\blank.htm

Please reboot into safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu).
Be sure you're able to view hidden files, and remove the following files in bold (if found):
c:\winxp <- this folder

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working. :tazz:

I suspect you'll still have some problems. Is your Recycle Bin working correctly?

When I delete
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\winxp\system32\blank.htm
it immediately reappears.
C:\winxp does not come up in any search. There are some close matches:
C:\WINDOWS\I386|WINXP.JP_
C:\WINDOWS\inf\q832483_271_winxpx
C:\WINDOWS\inf\q832483_271_winxpx.PNF
C:\WINDOWS\Drivers\Audio\WINXP (folder)
C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}
Any of these look suspicious?
The recycle bin seems ok, but some of the .tmp files I try to send there appear there but also reappear in their original location. There is a hidden folder called RECYLCER in C:\ I am not sure whether its normal or not. Some of the files I tried to delete ended up in this recylcer folder.
Here is my HJT log.

Hi guys. I'm still on the trail of this thing. I found a clue. I did a registry search for the infamous "winxp" and came up with some registry entries that have some of the offending file names in them (winxp, wiupdt, windupdates, winka, comm, etc). Can I start deleting any of these? The registry search results are below.

REGEDIT4
; RegSrch.vbs © Bill James

; Registry search results for string "winxp" 12/22/2004 10:54:55 AM

; NOTE: This file will be deleted when you close WordPad.
; You must manually save this file to a new location if you want to refer to it again later.
; (If you save the file with a .reg extension, you can use it to restore any Registry changes you make to these values.)
