Hi and thank you in advance to anyone who even reads this, and thanks again to anyone who can provide assistance.

My PC began experiencing problems back in June this yr. I registered with Geeks To Go and began going through the steps in the "must read first" post. I cleaned a ton of stuff off of the system. But several items always appeared in the scans even after it said they were cleaned. But I could handle what was left as far as popups and such not wanting to waste anyones time.

I got the Winfixer popup late July early August. That hung around for a while even atfer repeated scans and clean attempts. Was going to ask for assistance then but one day it just stopped showing up. I don't think I had anything to do with it though.

Now the popups are just getting out of control. I can't open a page without another one opening with an ad. If I leave my PC for even 10 min I come back to no less than 50 popups after just a short time. The casino ones are just ridiculus now. Even have some now that have no window, just an animation with a little close X near the top. I also have dialuge boxes poping up randomly asking to install programs. I say VX2 because its the most common item I see when doing scans.

I can go on and on about whats wrong but I'm just going to post the log and hope some one can find something. I currently run CleanUp, AdAware SE, CWShredder, SpyBot, Ewido, Microsoft AntiSpy, and TrojanHunter on almost a daily basis. I have TrendMicro PC-cillin Internet Security (trial version, might be outdated though). I run these scans on almost a daily basis and update them as often as possible. They are now picking up fewer and fewer items but the problems are getting worse.

• Run HijackThis
  
• Click SCAN and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')
  
• POST the log into this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

Step 3: deleted HJT.
Step 4: reinstalled it with the link you provided its now in its own folder in Program

• Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe.
  
• Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then OPEN the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.
  
• Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #"1" for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing Enter.
  
• This will scan your computer and it may appear as if nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, Notepad will open with a log.
  
• Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

• From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing "2" and then pressing ENTER.
  
• Then press any key to reboot your computer.
  
• After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer.
  
• When it's finished, Notepad will open with a log.
  
• Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Hi Trevuren,


I ran option #2 from the L2mfix.bat program. It rebooted to computer and then something else happened. It was unexpected to me and I don't know if it means anything but I will list it here just to be safe.

When the PC rebooted the icons disappeared as expected but then the L2mfix box and an error message titled "Registry Editor came up. In the L2mfix box it said

"Killing explorer and Rundll32.exe
The system cannot find the path specified.
0 file(s) copied"

Then in the "Registry Editor" box it said

"Cannot export backregs\9f337488-5950-4E71-8441-3F7C77022546.reg: Error opening the file. There may be a disk or file system error."

I clicked ok and it did the scan. Here is the log.

I need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes.

• Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
• Click on Options, Settings.
• In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
• Under Startup Options uncheck: Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
• Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck: Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
• After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
• Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

• First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:

Hi Trevuren,

Thanks a million. I really appreciate all the help.

I did everything as perscribed. Only one thing worth mentioning. After Fixing all the checked items and rebooting in safe mood the logon screen had two names, one was "Administrator" which asked for a password and the other was my name. I logged into both and deleted the file you said to,(only some were there). Then I rebooted in normal mode and ran HJT. Here is the log.

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Reconfigure Windows XP to hide hidden files:

• Click Start. Open My Computer.
• Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
  
• Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect "Show hidden files and folders".
• Check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
• Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

2. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE

• Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
• Left click on "System Restore Tab"
• Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
• Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE

• Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
• Click on "Apply"

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

To protect yourself further:

• Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
