Could someone help me :tazz:
The other morning (two days ago) at 0751 Norton inform of virus infection; ad-ware is also responding to block continous (cookies I think).

Upon investigation I find I have a number of problems: It seems in order of malignancy: hclean.exe, wareout, alexa.

My own efforts and following the Geekstogo instructions seems to have helped a great deal, but the hclean.exe continues to be active--according to Norton.

Also, it seems my browser IE 6.0 is working better and does not have the locked surfing toolbar any longer.

Any help would be appreciated

I am now posting my Hijackthis log:

Hi Mugreb bak welcome to GeeksToGo

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://forums.subrat...e=post&id=43811
http://swandog46.gee.../Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

When your system reboots, follow the prompts. Afterwards, HijackThis will launch. Please click Scan, and check the following items:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {A4FF0092-D294-8785-C015-E3159C5ED5D5} - trycrt.dll (file missing)
O1 - Hosts: localhost 127.0.0.1
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {08BEC6AA-49FC-4379-3587-4B21E286C19E} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {34805D32-AD89-469E-8503-A5666AEE4333} - http://207.188.7.150...etzip/RdxIE.cab
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{CF90B140-F74D-4B09-A47D-D8F1F6734D4C}: NameServer = 195.95.218.52,85.255.112.16

Click Fix Checked. Close HijackThis, and click OK to proceed.

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Finally, please post the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt, along with a new HijackThis log.

Armodelux,

Thank you for your kind reply.

Things did not go smoothly, but I think I have finished. 1.(the fixwareout.exe from the swandog46 site did not run-- the other: forums did) 2. I could not find the report.txt either but I saved a copy of the logfile that appeared--that logfile and the new Hijack this file are now appended.

Again, thanks much for your help

Hi Mugreb

In your C:\ drive there should be a fixwareout folder. Look in that folder for the logfile.

Open HijackThis and click Scan. Put a check next to this:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmkxa.exe] C:\WINNT\system32\dmkxa.exe

Close all other windows except HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Reboot. Are you continuing to have any problems? Has Norton detections ended?

Then post a new HijackThis log along with the fixwareout log if you find it.

Hi Armodelux,

Good news:

I am getting no more Norton detections or baloons.

My Browser seems to be working well now.

Norton is now updated and scan completed

Unsure news:

I have looked in C:\fixwareout folder (and the rest of the machine) for report.txt. With no results--I may have done something wrong huh?

Questions:

Will all of the above remove the hclean as well?

If another computer on the home network was exposed to this machine will it most likley be infected also.

Sincerely,

Mugreb

Hi Magreb,

I can't say for sure if another machine on the network would be infected or not, if you like post a Hijackthis log from that machine and we can check.

I don't like that entry inHijackThis disappearing at all. Even though the log looks clean, I'd like to check if something is lurking in the background.

1) Download F-Secure Blacklight (blbeta.exe) to your desktop.
- Double click on blbeta.exe to run the program. Accept the user agreement.
- Leave "Scan through windows explorer" checked.
- Click Scan.
After the scan finishes, click on Next, then Exit.

BlackLight will create a log on your desktop with the name "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log". Please post that log.

2) Please RIGHT-CLICK HERE to download Silent Runner's.
  • Save it to the desktop.
  • Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
  • You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done, let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once you receive the prompt All Done!, open the text file on the desktop, copy that entire log, and paste it here.
*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

Looks clean :tazz:

The only comment I'll make is, in both computers Adobe Acrobat needs updating, version 7.0 is since long out..and in this new one you should get IE 6.0 you're using an old IE version..

Anything else?

Armodelux,

Again, my sincere thanks--

No further questions in this regard, but I do have a question or two--I realize you may not wish to answer but...

1) Is Firefox more resistant to virus?

2) Is Apple completely resistant to virus?

3) Is Linux more resistant to virus?

Regardless,

again

Thanks for your valuable time.

Mugreb,

None of them are fullproof..but they are safer in the sense that because Windows and IE are used by almost 90% of computer users that's what malware writers are targeting. So using Firefox, Linux or Mac you would be on safer grounds but that doesn't mean that you would never get infected.

Please take the following into consideration to maintain a clean computer.

Visit Windows Update regularly to get the latest security updates. You can also enable automatic updates.Your antivirus software and antispyware programs should also be updated regularly. Make a habit of running scans on a timely basis. Be careful about what you download, scan every file before clicking on it.

Additional programs to consider:

Spywareblaster Prevents the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software.Blocks spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.Restricts the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer.
Spywareguard An anti-virus program scans files before you open them and prevents execution if a virus is detected - SpywareGuard does the same thing, but for spyware!
IE/Spyad
Adds a list of malicious sites to your Restricted Sites Zone.
Firefox An alternate browser safer than IE

A good article to read:
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Regards,
