I installed a 256MB RAM chip in a Dell laptop for a friend the other day. She has xp home and there is just one slot for memory. The install went fine but when I went into properties of 'my computer' it now shows 320MB of memory. How can that be when it only has one 256MB stick in it?

I taking a guess on this, but the way Dell make laptops is that the user can only upgrade one of the slots of RAM. So there for, the other slot can only have 64MB of RAM, which will give you 320MB of RAM when you installed the stick of RAM. Hope that this helps.
