I have been having problems with popups sending me to www.winfixer.com or asking me if I want free scans from WinFixer. I'm also experiencing some occasional drag on my processor, which started about the same time. I ran Ad-aware, Spybot, Norton, and MS Antispyware. None of these alleviated the problem so here is my HijackThis log:

1. Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
• After the files are extracted, please REBOOT your computer into Safe Mode.
  
  You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  
  
• Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• You will first be presented with a warning and a list of forums to seek help at.

2. The fix will run then HijackThis will open.

• In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

• After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
• Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
• Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

3. Download and install CleanUp!

• Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
• Set the program up as follows:
• Click "Options..."
• Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
• Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
• Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

[*]Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
[*]It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

• Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
• Set the program up as follows:
• Click "Options..."
• Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
• Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
• Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

Ok a bit of a problem. I boot in safe mode and the start menu, task bar, desktop, nothin comes up. It says Windows XP across the top, Safe Mode in all the corners, but I can't do anything but open the task manager to do anything. It worked fine a couple of days ago in safe mode, when I ran my spyware scans, but now it doesn't work on my account or on the Administrator account either.

Try this:

To use the System Configuration Utility to start Windows XP in Safe mode

• Close all open programs.
• Click Start > Run.
• In the Run dialog box, type msconfig and then click OK.
• In the System Configuration Utility, on the BOOT.INI tab, check /SAFEBOOT.
• Click OK.
• When you are asked to restart the computer, click Restart
• The computer restarts in Safe mode. (This can take several minutes.)

When you are finished working in Safe mode, use the System Configuration Utility to start Windows XP in normal mode.

To use the System Configuration Utility to start Windows XP in normal mode

• Finish what you need to do in Safe mode.
• In the section "To use the System Configuration Utility to start Windows XP" above, repeat steps 1-3 (inclusively).
• But in step 4, uncheck /SAFEBOOT.
• Close all programs, and restart the computer.

Ok I've done everything but step 4. I click on the scan button but the new window does not pop up like it should, almost like the javascript on it isn't working.

When in Safe Mode, my desktop, Start Menu, Task Bar, nothing loads. I managed to run everything from within the Taskmanager.

When I ran HJT to remove those files it did not show O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {827DC836-DD9F-4A68-A602-5812EB50A834} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\fcyaa.dll.

I really appreciate your help with this problem. What should I do now??

Ok Popups seem to be taken care of and I haven't noticed anymore unusual drag on my cpu. Thank you so much for helping me get rid of this pesky Winfixer problem.

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Reconfigure Windows XP to hide hidden files:

• Click Start. Open My Computer.
• Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
  
• Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect "Show hidden files and folders".
• Check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
• Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

2. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE

• Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
• Left click on "System Restore Tab"
• Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
• Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE

• Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
• Click on "Apply"

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

To protect yourself further:

• Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
