I have done all the steps requested before posting this. Initially I was having a problem with WinAntispyware. After appllying the recommended tools and scanners I persistantly get an alert from ewido that the file: winsvr.dll is infected with spyware. virtumonde. The only option it gives is Clean, which I do. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Here is my HiJackThis log:

I think we are just making Mr. Virtumode angry.
I attempted to follow the instructions you gave, but am having a few difficulties. First, I had some problems booting into Safe Mode. I would hit F8, get the boot choices, select "Safe Mode". It would come up to a windows logon screen, where I would select which User to log on. Then it would hang at a black screen which had a banner top and bottom indicating "Safe Mode". After repeating this process a few more times, I selected "Safe Mode with Command Prompt". This successfully got me booted into safe mode.

I was then able to run KillVundo followed by HijackThis as instructed. However, when I finished and hit enter to reboot, it did not reboot and I did not get the Blue screen of death. Instead it returned to the black screen with the "Safe Mode" banner top and bottom.

When I rebooted into Windows normally, I was immediatly greeted with the ewido alert warning of Virtumode. I reran HijackThis and saw that the "fixed" lines were still there. I ran cleanup, and then attempted the repair process again. This time I was able to get into Safe Mode with no problem. I repeated the process, and again the system did not rebboot on it's own. When I rebooted, the ewido warnings were still persistant.

I tried running the online scanner (several times). I would start it and I would leave the computer. Upon returning I would find that no explorer windows were open. After accusing everyone in my family of shutting my scan down I discovered that sometimes when the ewido alert warning of Virtumode comes up, all explorer windows shut down.

Hello again! I'm sorry it has taken so long for me to get back to you. Normally I am not this slow in responding. However, with the problems you were having, I needed to talk to the creator of the Vundo fix to get an idea as to what may be causing this to not work properly

When you ran the fix, were you logged into the computer as the Administrator? This MUST be done this way, otherwise it won't work. For instance, if you have a separate user account on your pc and run the fix from there...it's not going to work.

You can safely log in as the Admin, and run the entire fix again from the beginning. If Safe Mode is giving you trouble, go ahead and run it all in Normal Mode. It will work from there, as well. Just make sure you are running as the Administrator

Let me know how that goes.

Still no joy. I went through the steps again (twice), this time in normal windows mode. I have only one account on the machine, and it has administrator privileges. Both times the result was the same. When I run Kill Vundo and type in the requested lines, the following text is on the screen:

The file path you entered is valid

Then when I am finished and hit enter to reboot, Kill Vundo goes away and I am left with a blank screen. My desktop wallpaper is all that is there - no task bar. If I press control-alt-delete I can see that other tasks are still running. The computer does not reboot. I have to force a restart.

I dont know the exact casue of the errors with process yet but I'm working on it and hoping you may be able to help me.

If you are willing can you please uninstall Service Pack 2. Then reboot and try to complete the earlier instructions as provided by Kat.

Good News and Bad News. The good news is I no longer have the Virtumonde bug on my computer. The bad news is I had to reimage my drive to get rid of it.

I uninstalled Service Pack 2 and retried the removal steps. It still did not work. The computer had the same response as before. Then to complicate matters, I could no longer connect to the internet, the computer was extremely slow to boot, and I was getting numerous error messages. I then attempted to repair my Windows using the system disk, but the computer would not reboot after the attempt. I then tried reinstalling Windows in place. After the installation I could not boot the computer.

I have Norton Ghost, and had an image that was about a year old. I used that to restore my drive.

Thanks for your help. Although not successful, I did learn a lot about spyware/adware removal and prevention.

I"m sorry you had to resort to that. As you can see, sometimes the infections can imbed themselves so deeply, it is very very difficult for us to remove...or can cause so many other problems on your pc, it makes it virtuatlly useless.

These are some tips to reduce the potential for Spyware/Adware/Virus infection in the future:
I would strongly recommend reviewing and installing the following applications if you dont currently have them running on your system:

Use Anti-Virus Software
It is very important that your computer has Anti-Virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

Update your AntiVirus Software
It is imperitive that you update your Anti-Virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your Anti-Virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall
I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

[/list]I strongly recommend using both of these programs to catch most spyware/adware

Prevention Programs:

• SpywareBlaster -- SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• SpywareGuard -- SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• IE/Spyad -- IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts File -- The MVPS Hosts File replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
• Google Toolbar -- Get the free Google Toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

Other Necessary Programs:

• A More Secure Browser
  Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser.
  There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend using Firefox

Be sure to also keep up with Windows and IE updates.

So how did I get infected in the first place?

Update all these Programs Regularly:Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released. Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
