HI, I'm new, and by new I mean not just to these forums, but new to computers in general. I've been doing some research since our computer starting throwing up those winfix and winantispyware popups. I've got Norton Internet security and Ad-Aware Se already on my computer, but I downloaded the cleanup, cwshredder, CCleaner, and spybot, as well as running the trendmicro free scan, but we're still getting those popups, as well as others from dating services and travel agencies. I've also noticed a lot of processes running in my task manager. Our computer has also been very sluggish lately, and when I try to select "my computer" from the start menu, (the desktop icon disappeared, along with my original version of Ad-Aware!!!) it does the little flashlight thingy for a bit before finding it. I downloaded hijack this and here is my log. I'm very, very new to computers so please talk to me like I'm a child in your responses! :tazz: Here's my log:

Hello and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Kat, and I will be helping you get your computer fixed back up and on the go! You should either print these instructions, or save them to a Notepad file on your desktop. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, and you will be unable to access the internet at that time!

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning and a list of forums to seek help at.
    it should look like this

    VundoFix V2.1 by Atri
By pressing enter you agree that you are using this at your own risk
Please seek assistance at one of the following forums:
    http://www.atribune.org/forums
    http://www.247fixes.com/forums
    http://www.geekstogo.com/forum
    http://forums.net-integration.net

  • At this point press enter one time.
  • Next you will see:

Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
    • C:\WINDOWS\msagent\CHARS\binabr.dll
  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
  • Next you will see:

Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):C:\WINDOWS\msagent\CHARS\rbanib.*
  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
  • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {827DC836-DD9F-4A68-A602-5812EB50A834} - C:\WINDOWS\msagent\CHARS\binabr.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: binabr - C:\WINDOWS\msagent\CHARS\binabr.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: rasac - C:\WINDOWS\Cursors\rasac.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: svcxml - C:\WINDOWS\system\svcxml.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: unbin - C:\WINDOWS\Web\unbin.dll
  • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
  • Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.
Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

HI. I got into safe mode, started up the vundo.bat, the FIRST time I tried, when I got to the second filepath, Norton popped up and wanted me to not allow the script, but I did, and that made vundo.bat get weird and it didn't start hijackthis. The second time I tried, the 2nd filepath was said to be invalid. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. :tazz:

Hello again! :) You're not doing anything wrong. The filepath was invalid the second time because you successfully killed it! :tazz: Go ahead and open HijackThis manually and finish the fix from there...and then post back here with the requested logs. :)

OK! So I did what you told me, and just to be safe I tried the killvundo.bat thing again, but it wouldn't let me hit enter to get the first prompt again, it just sat at the opening screen. I don't think I put the "*" in at the end of the second filepath the first time, didn't see it on my notepad copy. Hope that is not bad. Anyways, I ran hijack this, and checked what you told me. I checked this one: O20 - Winlogon Notify: binabr - C:\WINDOWS\msagent\CHARS\binabr.dll - but it said "file missing" at the end. I also did not get the "blue screen of death" but rather just restarted manually. Then I tried the activescan....3 times...BUT everytime it would start, ALL my internet windows would just suddenly disappear, along with all my desktop icons and navigation bar at the bottom. Those would all come back up in a few moments, but I had to restart IE, so I never got to do the activescan. Anyways, here's my new hijackthis log. I also did not see a vundofix.txt file in the folder!!! What's my problem anyways??? :) Can I start over or do anything else to fix that stuff? :tazz: Thanks again for helping me. :)

You didn't do anything wrong, I promise!! :tazz: By looking at your new log, it's evident you had TWO separate strains of Vundo, which I didn't know from the first log. I want you to delete ALL of the contents of the current Vundo folder, and empty it out of your recycle bin. Then let's get this thing once and for all! :)

    • C:\WINDOWS\Cursors\rasac.dll

  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.

  • Next you will see:

Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):C:\WINDOWS\Cursors\casar.*
  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
  • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {827DC836-DD9F-4A68-A602-5812EB50A834} - C:\WINDOWS\Cursors\rasac.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: rasac - C:\WINDOWS\Cursors\rasac.dll

Please post a fresh HijackThis log, along with the Vundo.txt here in a reply! If you run into trouble again, just proceed like I told you last time. Also, don't worry if some of the lines do NOT show up in HijackThis. That is a GOOD thing if they don't! :)

OK! Feel like I'm actually making some progress here! :) I did the vundofix in safe mode and that worked perfectly, then hijackthis opened on it's own finally! Although I checked and fixed two of the items you listed this one wasn't present in the hijackthis log: O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {827DC836-DD9F-4A68-A602-5812EB50A834} - C:\WINDOWS\Cursors\rasac.dll
Anyways, I "fixed checked" the other two, got the blue screen of death, rebooted, did cleanup, and here's my new hijackthis log as well as the vundofix.txt I actually have this time! Thanks again!!!! :tazz:

:) YOu did it!!! Excellent job! That is a clean log!! How is everything running now??

Congratulations! Your log is now clean! :tazz:

Here are some items that you will want to add to your to-do list:

These are some tips to reduce the potential for Spyware/Adware/Virus infection in the future:
I would strongly recommend reviewing and installing the following applications if you dont currently have them running on your system:

Use Anti-Virus Software
It is very important that your computer has Anti-Virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.
See this link for a listing of some online and stand-alone Anti-Virus programs:
Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

Update your AntiVirus Software
It is imperitive that you update your Anti-Virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your Anti-Virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall
I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Understanding and Using Firewalls

Spyware/Adware Detection and Removal Programs:
Understanding Spyware, Browser Hijackers, and DialersAd-Aware SEIf you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to setup and use Ad-Aware SE
How to use Ad-Aware SE to remove Spyware
Spybot S&DIf you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to setup and use Spybot S&D
How to use Spybot to remove Spyware
I strongly recommend using both of these programs to catch most spyware/adware

Prevention Programs:
  • SpywareBlaster -- SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • SpywareGuard -- SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad -- IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts File -- The MVPS Hosts File replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
  • Google Toolbar -- Get the free Google Toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other Necessary Programs:
  • A More Secure Browser
Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser.
There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend using Firefox
Be sure to also keep up with Windows and IE updates.

Windows Security and Critical Updates
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Internet Explorer Security and Critical Updates
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.asp

And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Update all these Programs Regularly:Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released. Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Um, everything seems to be o.k. now! I hope! I've had no popups, and things seem to be running more smoothly! :tazz: I'm just wondering how I got it in the first place? I'll definately have to look into your suggestions here at the end, especially since a co-worker recommended Firefox over IE. I'm still a little scared, though! I have terrible times with computers. Anyways Kat, THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!!!!!! :) :) :)
