I have been having a problem with Norton disabling on it's own. Using Spybot and Adaware and I have seen that I have spyware in the registry. I have found an entry indicating it has affected my Micosoft Firewall and my antivirus. These entries have been "fixed". I have been watching my firewall and that has appeared to be On since I turned it back on. My antivirus continues to disable requiring me to enable it again. A confusing point to me is that my AOL (occasionaly) does not respond until Norton disables and as soon as I enable Norton my AOL responds, runs again. I don't understand this but I have determined there is a patten. I hope you can help me. Here are my log files.

Welcome to GTG.

Sorry for the delay. I will close your other 3 duplicate topics. We'll work on this one now :tazz:

This is just a hunch, but I think you might have one of the infections where it disables your antivirus and firewall. So let's give this a try (run Ewido in Safe Mode):

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Download smitRem at http://noahdfear.gee.../click.php?id=1 and save the file to your desktop.

Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Don't run it yet.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.

CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Run CleanUp! and click on the Options button. Uncheck 'Scan local drives for temporary files'. Also uncheck those two Newsgroup entries if you don't want to delete them. Click OK and then click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run. After it's done, choose Yes to logoff.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://bfc.myway.com...de_srchlft.html
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\deSrcAs.dll
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [1] C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe /c erase "C:\DOCUME~1\Shirley\LOCALS~1\Temp\AcsInstall.dll"
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [2] C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe /c erase "C:\DOCUME~1\Shirley\LOCALS~1\Temp\insmac2k.dll"

Run the smitRem.exe tool you downloaded earlier. Follow the prompts on the screen. Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:

* Click on scanner.
* Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
* You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
* If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
* Do NOT select 'Perform action on all infections'.
* If you are unsure of any entry found, select none for now.
* When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
* Save the report to your desktop.

Close Ewido.

Next go to Control Panel->Display->Desktop (or Appearance)->Customize Desktop->Web-> Uncheck 'Security Info' if present.

Reboot back into Windows and go to http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm to do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked. Save the scan log.

Then post the Panda log here along with the logs for HijackThis, smitfiles.txt and Ewido.

Thank you for your response. I followed your directions but I had two problems. I downloaded smitRem from the website (I did a cut and paste) but later when I ran it, all it did was extract files. I ran the program again to see if I missed something and it asked if I wanted to overwrite; I said no to all the prompts. At this point I moved on to run Ad-aware which found 7 negligible that I removed. I was fine from there until I ran activescan in Panda. I did not see a box to check autoclean. Activescan did, however, identify one spyware, "myway". Below are my logs except for smitfiles. I did a search for a log but couldn't fine one. I downloaded the smitRem.exe in Firefox. Would that have made a difference? I noticed I had to run Panda Activescan in IE. Should Activescan have removed "myway" if I had checked the autoclean button? I couldn't find it.

Did you run the extracted contents from the smitRem.exe file? You need to run the extracted files in order for it to work.

Uninstall MyWay via the Add/Remove panel.

Check and fix these in HijackThis:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://bfc.myway.com...de_srchlft.html
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\deSrcAs.dll

Delete this folder if found:

C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\

No I did not run the extracted files. I didn't understand what I was looking at. So I need to run: delfiles.cmd, reg.exe, RunThis.bat, LTDFix.exe, replace.cmd, and taskkill.exe. That must be where I follow the prompts. Sorry.

I did check and fix the R1 and R3 items before, but I noticed they didn't get removed. I'll try again then.

Thank you.

I followed your directions and ran the extracted contents from smitRem.exe. Two of them were a very quick black flash. I'm assuming they ran that quickly. I uninstalled MyWay Search Assistant via Add/Remove. Windows said it would be deleted when I rebooted. I hope this was the correct program. The two items you listed in HijackThis were gone. I deleted C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\. However, when I rebooted the computer, a window popped up reading:

"Windows cannot find c:\delfiles.cmd. Make sure you typed the name correctly, then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search."

I did the search and I did find the file. My background is still blue and it should have a picture. How do I proceed from here?

I rebooted the computer and did not get the same message as before. However Norton was disabled. I checked the Control Panel and found that MyWay Search Assistant is still appearing. There is no button to select Change/Remove. Instead it shows Used Rarely. I did a search and found it in the Recycling Bin and Emptied this. It did not appear in Program Files. I rebooted and Norton did not disable, but MyWay Search Assistant is still showing in Add/Remove Programs as before.

The taskbar looks different, possibly the coloring. Shouldn't my background be normal not needing to be reset? Is something else going on?

Wait a minute, hopefully this is all normal :)

Did you say your background is just blue? Can you (or do you?) know how to change your background wallpaper/image? Right click on an empty area on your desktop and choose Properties. Go to Desktop tab and choose the image you want there and hit OK. Back to normal now?

For smitRem, you are suppose to run RunThis.bat...sorry for not being more clear earlier :tazz:

My desktop background is back to normal. It must have reset to "None" during the fix. Should "My Way Search Assistant" still be showing in my Control Panel, Add/Remove? It is still there without a button to remove it. I supposedly removed it this afternoon. Thanks for your help!

That's great :tazz:

Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc Tools->Open Uninstall Manager and look for MyWay Search Assistant. Click on it once and then click on the Delete this entry button in HijackThis.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

I understand your directions and followed them, however, MyWay Search Assistant was not there! I thought we had this just about taken care of. The list jumps from Musicmatch to Netzero. I checked each item one by one in case it was out of order and it wasn't there. But it is somehow still showing in Control Panel, Add/Remove. Is there another way to remove this, or is it possible that MyWay is not functioning in it's current state? How should I proceed?

Thank you, Sorry.

No need to apologize. We're here to help :tazz: Let's get this wrapped up once and for all:

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to Start->Run and type in regedit and hit OK. Go to File->Export and save the registry somewhere as a backup. While in the Registry Editor, navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall and delete MyWay Search Assistant if you see it there

If any of the above registry keys are giving you problems deleting, right click on them and click on Permissions. Then click on the Advanced button. Make sure the first box (Inherit from parent...) is checked. Click OK and OK. Then try deleting the entry again. Once you're done, close the Registry Editor.

See if that will do the job.

I saved a backup of my registry. I made it through to HKEY_Local_Machine...\Uninstall and did not find MyWay Search Assistant. How should I proceed?

Thank you.

Does this user account have administrative rights/access? Try using another user account and see if you can find that entry in the registry. If not, do this:

Right click on this link http://www.greyknigh...spy/RegSrch.vbs and choose 'Save As'. Save it somewhere. Now run that program and do a search for these files (if more than one, make sure to search and save them separately):

MyWay Search Assistant
My Way Search Assistant

Save the file/files and post the results in the forum.

I checked the other user account and did not find anything. However, I did have five finds using RegSrch.vbs. There are three files. The first two files, searching for "MyWay Search Assistant", look to be the same. The third file searched for "My Way Search Assistant" had three finds.
