I have tried everything to rid myself of this pest. Random popup windows pointing to aaawebsearch and 69sexsearch. At least 20 pop up at a time. Every restart has my startpage changed to aaawebsearch.

I have run all online scanners (Trend Micro, Pandascan), which both found random files, mostly trojans, and all have been deleted. I then run TDS, which found more trojans, all deleted.

Ad-aware scan constantly comes up with 3 registry keys and 3 registry values, even after deletion. Spybot comes up with nothing. CWSShredder also found nothing.

Also, Windows Update is completely disabled, so installing any updates are impossible for me. I have no idea if this is related, but I've e-mailed Microsoft about it.

I guess I need some help.

There is also a .dat file of the same name next to xpsp2fw.exe.

Size: 102 bytes

Created: Wednesday, December 15, 2004, 12:54:08 PM

Looks like it might be it. That is the exact date of the start of the problems I'm experiencing. Both of these files are accessed on startups it seems.

Need anything more specific?

Hi Scorp006

I see that you are using Norton GoBack\GBPoll.exe is there any files in HijackThis that are part of your
backups if yes can you please adentify them in your HJT.Log

Please download Ad-aware

Download Ad-aware from: http://www.lavasoft.de/res/aaw6.exe

Install the program and launch it.

First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files.

Next, we need to configure Ad-aware for a full scan.

-> Click on the Gear icon (second from the left) to access the preferences/settings window

1. In the General window make sure the following are selected:
  • Automatically save log-file

  • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal

  • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
2. Click on the Scanning button on the left and select :
  • Scan Within Archives

  • Scan Active Processes

  • Scan Registry

  • Deep Scan Registry

  • Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s

  • Scan my Hosts file

  • Under Click here to select drives + folders, choose:

  • All of your hard drives
-> Click on the Advanced button on the left and select:
  • Include additional process information

  • Include additional file information

  • Include environment information

  • Include additional object details
-> Click the Tweak button and select:
  • Under the Scanning Engine:
    • Unload recognized processes during scanning
    • Include basic Ad-aware settings in logfile
    • Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile
  • Under the Cleaning Engine:
    • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
-> Click on Proceed to save the settings.

-> Click Start and on the next screen choose Activate in-depth Scan at the bottom of the page and then choose:
  • Use Custom Scanning Options
-> Click Next and Ad-aware will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected.

-> Save the log file when it asks and then click Finish

-> When finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose Select All from the drop down menu and click Next).

-> Reboot your computer.

It looks like a virus xpsp2fw.exe Have check my system XP_SP2 no file of that name

I didn't notice any Go Back files in the Hijack search. Apparently, Go Back erases all backups after a virus scan. I just virus scanned this thing 3 hours ago. That's the reason I couldn't just "go back" before I started having all these problems last Wednesday. I scanned for viruses immediately. Go figure :tazz:

Anyway, a ran Adaware, and it came up with 15 or so things this time I believe. Here is my log.

Hi Scorp006

Lets try to see what this file is
Open task manager and see if we can stop this exe file.

as long as xpsp2fw.exe file is running we will not be able rename it or the dat file
if you cannot stop it in normal mode try safemode

Hi Scorp006

(1) Be sure you're able to view http://www.xtra.co.n...1916458,00.html hidden files and folders
Clean out all your temp files, internet temp files. History. Use start run and copy & paste this into the box cleanmgr /sagerun:50

(2) Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

Everything seems to be just fine now. I've experienced no random popups in the last 2 hours, a restart yields no changed home page, and spybot finds nothing.

I'll run andascan, TDS, and Ad-aware again just to be sure.

Congratulations! Your system is CLEAN :tazz:

How do you prevent spyware from being installed again? We strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster (it's free for personal use) Click Here.

Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Consumes no system resources.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page.

It's also very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks. Click Here to make sure that you have the latest patches for Windows.

These next two steps are optional, but will provide the greatest protection.
1. Use ANY browser besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness. We usually recommend FireFox Posted Image.
2. Install Sun's Java. It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine .

It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder if everything is working okay.

After doing all these, your system will be thoroughly protected from future threats. ;)
