Hi, I have been having huge problems with this computer, it is extremely slow and also have been getting pop-ups for Adware Winspyware Removal. I have run Norton, Adware, Spybot, Ewido, but nothing significant comes up. Here is the HJT log, hope you can help with this!

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
• After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
• Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• You will first be presented with a warning and a list of forums to seek help at.

  Fix these if you did not set these, no longer want them, or if you did not have Spybot set them:

• After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
• Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
• Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

• Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HijackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

There are some optional items in your log, but we can discuss those after we clean the main infection.

Thank you I will do this, but I cannot seem to get this computer to run in safe mode right now even by using msconfig, I can run in VGA mode, can I follow the above instructions using VGA mode??

Ok, I think I have done a fatal error, I ran Vundo everything went fine, I had printed off your instructions downstairs from another computer and I think part was cut off. I ran Cleanup and it deleted a few things that maybe I shouldn't have deleted because I can't run Panda Active Scan. the cleanup was on Standard Mode. Unfortunately I did not have System Restore on because I thought it was better to scan without it.

Hope I didn't delete anything that I shouldn't have.

PLEASE HELP.

As always it would be good to print these instructions.
Please make sure System Restore is enabled. It is not such a good idea to disable it unless you are instructed to do so by one of the staff.
Go to Start>Run and type msconfig Press enter.
When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings Link on the left.
Check the box labeled Turn ON System Restore.

Reboot.
We shall clean System Restore at the END of our fix when I can verify that everything is running well.

Vundofix seems to have done its job. I no longer see the bad entries in your log.

These entries are optional to fix with HijackThis depending on your needs. They use resources and can be unnecessary. Fixing them here with HJT will not prevent you from opening them manually as needed.

Try once again to do an online virus scan with Panda ActiveScan Here. You need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.

• Once you get to the Panda site, scroll down a bit and click on Scan your PC
• A new window will appear; click on Check Now!
• A new window will appear; fill in the boxes (Country, State, email addy)
• Click on Scan Now! >
  If you have never used ActiveScan before, you will be prompted to install an ActiveX control (asinst.cab) : click on Install. Panda will install the component, and then install the latest signature files.
• From "Select a device to scan...", choose "My Computer"
• Allow the scan to run. It'll take a while.
• When complete, click on "See Report", and then on "Save report"; save it to a convenient location.
• Please post that report in your next reply. Simply open the text file, then copy/paste the content here. Also, please include a fresh HJT log.

If you still have problems with Panda, try Housecall. Using IE:

Let it remove what it finds. Make sure your IE security is NOT blocking the ActiveX download . (It takes a long time for the Active-X to download prior to the scan... be patient as you may think nothing is happening. The download is especially slow if you are on dial-up.)

Ok, I tried to run Panda Active Scan again, the computer seems to freeze everytime it goes to scan, it downloads the Active X and then after I click on My computer it doesn't scan, after a short period of time it freezes and the windows are very slow to dissapear, I actually have had to alt/ctrol/del to stop the process.

I ran Trend Micro and it said the computer was clean. Here is the new HJT log.

You log appears to be clean, too.
If there are no other user accounts on there that we need to look at logs from and if you feel that everything is running well, let’s flush System Restore and create a clean Restore Point.
(Using XP, you must be logged in as Administrator to do this.)
Go to Start>Run and type msconfig Press enter.
When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings Link on the left.
Check the box labeled Turn Off System Restore.

Reboot. Go back in and turn System Restore ON. A new Restore Point will be created.

Here is my standard list of simple steps that you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.
You may have already taken some of these steps:
1. Visit Windows Update:
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.

2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to 'prompt', and 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'disable'.

3. Download and install the following free programs:
a. SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacools...areblaster.html
b. SpywareGuard: http://www.javacools...ywareguard.html
Periodically check for updates.

4. Keep your antivirus software and firewall software up to date.

5. You might consider installing Mozilla / Firefox.

6.I would check for updates in SpyBot once a week or so.
Check for updates in Ad-aware frequently.
Ewido is a free trial product for 14 days. After that you can purchase it for full features OR you can also keep the free version to use as an on-demand scanner (recommended).
You will still be able to manually update Ewido using the *update* button

8. I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

9. After you use Windows XP for some time, the prefetch folder can get full of rarely used or obsolete links which can slow down your computer boot time noticeably. We recommend you delete all files in this folder about once a month.
To find the prefetch folder, enter this in the explorer address bar:
%windir%\prefetch

Romano's and Carlo's are okay except that LimeWire is installed. It is not technically malware by itself, but it can install malware because it opens the door for any number of worms, adware, and spyware infections when you use their network.

These instructions apply to both accounts, if you want to remove LimeWire, use the uninstaller:
Open the LimeWire folder.
Double click on the Uninstall LimeWire 18c icon.
Then delete the LimeWire folder in Program Files.
