go to here and download 'Hijack This!' self installer. Save it to the desktop or other suitable place. DO NOT just press run from the website Double click on the file and it will install to C:\program files\hijackthis and create an entry in the start menu and an optional shortcut on desktop.
Click on the entry in start menu or on the desktop to run HijackThis
Click the "Scan" button, when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.
Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.
It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required,
so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

what operating system have you got on the computer

if it says missing dll's then I asume 98 in which case you need to do this before HJT will work

download and install this from M$

you can save it to a disc at work & then install it at home
It should fit on a floppy as it's just over 1mb

I can't see any of the usual signs of PSguard there . But that doesn't mean that they are not there

please do this

* Run ActiveScan online virus scan here

When the scan is finished, anything that it cannot clean have it delete it. Make a note of the file location of anything that cannot be deleted so we can work out the way to delete it yourself.
- Save the results from the scan!

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from ActiveScan

I cant do that because my computer at home will no longer connect to the internet. i am using my work computer to post these replies. surprising that the log doesnt show any signs of psguard. i dont really have anything important stored on this machine. in fact it is one i was donated from work. would it be simpler to wipe it clean?please excuse my ignorance in this matter.

If it won't connect up and there is nothing important on it then a sensible appproach would be to wipe it out, format & reinstall from scratch making sure that you install an uptodate antivirus and firewall before letting it connect then make sure all updates are done

Have you got the install cd's otherwise we do have a few tools that will let us look deper and see if we can find anything

Before you go down the wipe out path try this
open HJT & press config/misc tools and tick both boxes about minor & empty sections and press generate start up list
Post that log back here as that shows extra places that the malware might be hiding

i dont have any install cds, unfortunately. i will try what you suggest with HJT later and post the results here. i guess i would have to go out and buy windows software if i wipe this machine? sounds expensive! iw ouldnt even know how to do it.

REM Notes:
REM DOSSTART.BAT is run whenenver you choose "Restart the computer
REM in MS-DOS mode" from the Shutdown menu in Windows. It allows
REM you to load programs that you might not want loaded in Windows,
REM (because they have functional equivalents) but that you do
REM want loaded under MS-DOS. The two primary candidates for
REM this are MSCDEX and a real mode driver for the mouse you ship
REM with your system. Commands that you want present in both Windows
REM and MS-DOS should be placed in the Autoexec.bat in the
REM \Image directory of your reference server. Please note that for
REM MSCDEX you will need to load the corresponding real-mode CD
REM driver in Config.sys. This driver won't be used by Windows 98
REM but will be available prior to and after Windows 98 exits.
REM
REM This file is also helpful if you want to F8 boot into MS-DOS 7.0
REM before Windows loads and access the CD-ROM. All you have to do
REM is press F8 and then run DOSSTART to load MSCDEX and your real
REM mode mouse driver (no need to remember the command line parameters
REM for these two files.
REM
REM - You MUST explicitly specify the CD ROM Drive Letter for MSCDEX.
REM - The string following the /D: statement must explicitly match
REM the string in CONFIG.SYS following your CD-ROM device driver.
REM MSCDEX.EXE /D:OEMCD001 /l:d

OK I see the problem

first go to C:\WINDOWS\RunningSpy.BAT( if it exists) right click it & select delete

then to C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT right click it & select open with and choose notepad and select these lines below & delete them

C:\WINDOWS\RunningSpy.BAT
attrib -s -h -r C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\OLEEXT.DLL
del C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\OLEEXT.DLL
attrib -s -h -r C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WININET.DLL
del C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WININET.DLL

then press file/save and say yes to prompt to overwrite if it comes up

next we need to replace the wininet.dll that has been deleted that is stopping you using the internet and I am attempting to find a clean copy for you

can you do a search on the computer for wininet.dll and see what turns up as it's just possible taht there might be a backup copy somewhere
