My Norton Antivirus (which the subscription ran out on ages ago) continually comes up with the error message:

Also PS Guard keeps popping up on the bottom right bit on the start bar and in other places on my computer.

I've used quite a few of the free spyware removal programmes but it all keeps coming back....

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Download the Hoster Here
Please do not use program yet

Unzip Hoster to your desktop

Open up the Hoster program.

• Make sure that the "make hosts writable?" button in the upper right corner is enabled.
• Click back up Host files
• then click Restore orginal host files
• close program

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of ewido security suite.Install ewido security suite
When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".

Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
The program will prompt you to update click the OK button

The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.On the left hand side of the main screen click update
Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the updates are installed, close Ewido for now.

Download the Killbox.
Unzip it to the desktop

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Place the following lines (complete paths) in bold in the "Full Path of File to Delete" box in Killbox, and click the red button with the white X on it after each

C:\WINDOWS\System32\shellexp.exe

For these file, put a mark next to "Delete on Reboot". Copy and paste each file into the file name box, then click the red button with the X after each. It will ask you if you want to reboot each time you click it, answer NO until after you've pasted the last file name, at which time you should answer Yes.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed.
Post me the contents of the smitfiles.txt log as you post back.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Now open Ewido Security Suite:* Click on scanner
* Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
* When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
* Save the report to your desktop
Reboot your computer.

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan.
Save the report and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

It seems clean. Just recently it's started freezing occasionally for 2-10 seconds at a time apparantly at random... I realise this could be/is a serious problem. It's started since moving my computer between cities 5 days ago and has not really got any better or worse...

Also thanks very much for the fix which worked perfectly. I'm very glad to have got rid of bloodhound and psguard.

I've just installed the firewall now. First time the computer froze I got the message:

Ok, just worked out that that was acutally just itunes trying to network with other people in my building. Another one's just come up saying the firewall blocked access to my computer (NetBIOS Session) from 100.0.1.76 (TCP Port 3778)[TCP Flags S]. Whatever that means.

Is the problem likely elsewhere then? Should I be backing up everything incase the hard drive is failing.

It looks like iTunes is trying to make you share files. If you don't want this to happen (incoming or outgoing), press deny as ZoneAlarm pops up. Be sure to put a check to 'remember this'.

Is it only freezing on these messages? Then it's likely to be gone after you denied access. Try it for a while and let me know.

Can you please do this:

Reboot to safe mode.

• Open HijackThis
• Click on the configure button on the bottom right
• Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
• Check off the 2 boxes next to the Box that says "Generate StartupList log”

• Copy and past the StartupList from notepad into your post
