Hey everyone. First time posting here. My internet keeps freezing on me at various times. Usually while loading a web page. The page will seem like it's loading, but just sits there. I'm unable to even click on the window any more and when I try to ctrl + alt + delete it, it says that the page is not responding. I click "close program" but it just sits there. When I hit ctrl + alt + delete again, a blue screen pops up saying that it is waiting for the "close dialog box to appear" or something of that nature. Anyways, I think a virus or Trojan is messing with my IE and altering something that is causing this freezing. Here is my Hijack This log. I have Windows 98 and am running Internet Explorer 6.0

I don't really know what any of this means, so any help would be great. Preferably on what I am supposed to fix in HiJack This or any advice on the freezing. Thanks in advance.

Hi prettyvacant, please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

Please reboot into safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu).
Be sure you're able to view hidden files, and remove the following files in bold (if found):
C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm

Reboot your computer.

Download Ad-aware from: http://www.geekstogo...n=download&id=5

Install the program and launch it.

First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files.

Next, we need to configure Ad-aware for a full scan.

-> Click on the Gear icon (second from the left) to access the preferences/settings window

1. In the General window make sure the following are selected:
  • Automatically save log-file
  • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
  • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
2. Click on the Scanning button on the left and select :
  • Scan Within Archives
  • Scan Active Processes
  • Scan Registry
  • Deep Scan Registry
  • Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
  • Scan my Hosts file
  • Under Click here to select drives + folders, choose:
  • All of your hard drives
-> Click on the Advanced button on the left and select:
  • Include additional process information
  • Include additional file information
  • Include environment information
  • Include additional object details
-> Click the Tweak button and select:
  • Under the Scanning Engine:
    • Unload recognized processes during scanning
    • Include basic Ad-aware settings in logfile
    • Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile
  • Under the Cleaning Engine:
    • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
-> Click on Proceed to save the settings.

-> Click Start and on the next screen choose Activate in-depth Scan at the bottom of the page and then choose:
  • Use Custom Scanning Options
-> Click Next and Ad-aware will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected.

-> Save the log file when it asks and then click Finish

-> When finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose Select All from the drop down menu and click Next).

-> Reboot your computer.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working. :tazz:

Okay, I made all the necessary fixes in HiJack This (14 in all) and I removed that "related.htm" file from my Web folder. I'm waiting to install ad-aware. I'm hoping this fixes everything. ::crosses fingers:: If all goes well in a week without freezing, I'll be sure to post here again and let you know you fixed my computer. If not, I'll post the next time it freezes on me and download ad-aware and await any possible solutions you have then. Soooo...hopefully I'll talk to you again in a week with nothing but positive news. =)

Thanks again in advance.

Sorry to say, but my computer froze again. =( Seems like the same problem still. I downloaded the Ad-Aware that you suggested. It ran like usual, but then it gets stuck on "performing conditional scans" and just stays there. I let it run for about a half hour after the progress bar hadn't moved, so i restarted my computer and restarted the scan. Same thing. Is this normal? Should I just wait until it finishes scanning? It doesn't seem to be moving along, though. I really wish it would though, because it says there are 574 New Critical Objects. I'd really like to move on to the next step and fix these problems, but it seems to be stuck on this one phase. Any suggestions?

Thanks again.
