Please Help… I have a nasty bug!! Whenever I run a scan on my system, with any antivirus software (I use McAfee regularly, but have tried also with this bug Panda online scan and ewido) my computer shuts down without warning before the scan is complete. The last scan I tired was ewido, and was a quick scan, only scanning the key registry and systems files. It found on virus, and then my computer shutdown prematurely again. Actually, the last time I tried to post this topic, my computer shutdown with no notice, and I was not actively running a scan, but my antivirus program was on.

I am running Dell Inspiron laptop, Pentium 4, 2.66GHz, 512MB RAM, Win XP Home 2002 SP2 (upgraded SP during the problem, not prior to), McAfee Dell Security Center (VirusScan & Firewall), Virus Scan Build 10.0.25, v 4400, DAT 4578.

I have run through your (and others) list of things to do before posting. I have disabled the Windows Restore feature, unhid the hidden files, as well as updated and run Windows Update, CleanUp, Adaware, Spybot, CWShredder, TroganHunter, Windows Malicious File Remover, Panda ActiveScan online, and ewido.

The previous work has removed lots of files, but the biggie still plagues me, and is keeping my system from being scanned by any virus detection program. Does anyone know what this virus (?) is, and how to get rid of it? Thanks for any help you can give.

I have run HiJackThis with the following results:

Hello and welcome to Geeks To Go.

Please download WindPFind

Extract WinPFind.zip to your c:\ folder.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Then open c:\WinPFind and double-click on WinPFind.exe.
When the program is open, click on the Start Scan button to start scanning your computer. Be patient as this scan may take a while.
When it is done, it will show a log and tell you the scan is completed. Reboot your computer back to normal mode and and post the contents of c:\WinPFind\WinPFind.txt as a reply to this topic.
